Seems pretty clear to me that he was slaggin the car....
Um. You missed the "utterly unecessary" part, didn't you?
If you actually have a need to drive an 8mpg SUV or truck, then it's not unecessary, now is it?
I don't drive a cheap/crappy car. I said I drive a "relatively fuel efficient" car. It's a Pontiac Grand Am. 4 door sedan. Comfortable. 3.1 litre engine with good power when needed. Gets very good highway mileage (I typically run between 25-35mpg depending on driving conditions). If I'm accelerating alot, the mileage isn't that great. If I'm crusing along at 75mph on a long trip, it's quite good.
I probably spend about 30 bucks a week on gas. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I also live in a "rich" part of town (Del Mar area of San Diego). You would simply not believe the number of SUVs here. All driven by people who have likely *never* driven them offroad and have *never* actually needed the extra space or carrying capacity of the vehicles themselves. Of course, they can arguably afford the gas, but it's still a stupid choice IMO.
The vast majority of people who own SUVs don't need them. They bought them because they were the "in thing". No other reason. So yeah. I'm mostly attacking the people who buy the cars, not the car's existence themselves. But if you want to take the attack personally, then by all means do so. It's your choice to decide if you are in the catagory of "idiot who owns and drives an SUV for no apparent reason". If you feel that label applies to you, then that's your decision. I'm just setting the criteria for idiotness. You're free to label yourself as such if you want.
