It seems to me that the people who slag off 4x4's are the same people who drive "a relatively fuel efficient car" (read **** box), mostly cos they cant afford to drive a proper car.

I don't believe he was "slagging" the four by. I believe he was talking sh;t about the driver. In your case he was pretty square to the nail. Stepping out on a limb, I'd go wit a) no one gives a sh;t how cool your knobbly tires are, b) no one gives a sh;t where your send your failed abortions to school and c) no one here will miss any of you if you drive your walking adverts for on-demand pregnancy termination off a cliff and die in a fire.

Oh, I can appreciate overpowered monster mobiles. They can be fun, definately. My favorite was my '87 Monte Carlo; that thing would haul ***! I still enjoyed my Saturns, too, though. 43MPG is nothing to laugh at.

As I said, it's all in the use. I see plenty of commuters throughout Westchester and New York, one or two per Humvee2 or Lincoln Navigator. Now, I understand that roads develop potholes, but that's just a gross misuse of automotive power.

Now, the big, knobby-tired eavy-duty diesel truck you drive should be used for, say, hauling construction materials, heavy machinery, etc. Even hauling dirtbikes/ATVs or towing watercraft through the back country would be fine. Otherwise you're just an idiot soccer moom who thinks that 10MPG to get to the school and grocery store is acceptable.

So, in conclusion, I'm blaming you. The driver.

Im a surfer. And I live in New zealand. I surf 5 times a week on average. And I surf all year round. Some of my favorite breaks involve some fairly gnarly journeys along all sorts of surfaces from, gravel to dirt to sand to rocky points that are submerged some of the time.

I can fit half a dozen boards in the back and still have room for the dog and a tent. And its big enuff to put a mattress in the back if im on my own and wanna sleep indoors.

In winter i like to go snowboarding. And because I have 4x4, I usually dont have to stuff about with chains on the wheels. With 4 boards on the roof, and me an a couple o mates drinking ****, rolling spliffs and me steering with my knees, I think Im probably enjoying motoring as it was meant to be enjoyed as foreseen by those great pioneers of motoring at the begining of the last century. Cheers!

Knobblies FTW

Ps. soccer is a girls game in NZ. Was always girls game in my mind...

Um. You missed the "utterly unecessary" part, didn't you?

If you actually have a need to drive an 8mpg SUV or truck, then it's not unecessary, now is it?

I don't drive a cheap/crappy car. I said I drive a "relatively fuel efficient" car. It's a Pontiac Grand Am. 4 door sedan. Comfortable. 3.1 litre engine with good power when needed. Gets very good highway mileage (I typically run between 25-35mpg depending on driving conditions). If I'm accelerating alot, the mileage isn't that great. If I'm crusing along at 75mph on a long trip, it's quite good.

I probably spend about 30 bucks a week on gas. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I also live in a "rich" part of town (Del Mar area of San Diego). You would simply not believe the number of SUVs here. All driven by people who have likely *never* driven them offroad and have *never* actually needed the extra space or carrying capacity of the vehicles themselves. Of course, they can arguably afford the gas, but it's still a stupid choice IMO.

The vast majority of people who own SUVs don't need them. They bought them because they were the "in thing". No other reason. So yeah. I'm mostly attacking the people who buy the cars, not the car's existence themselves. But if you want to take the attack personally, then by all means do so. It's your choice to decide if you are in the catagory of "idiot who owns and drives an SUV for no apparent reason". If you feel that label applies to you, then that's your decision. I'm just setting the criteria for idiotness. You're free to label yourself as such if you want.
