and have decided to buy myself a laptop. I'm planning to do some of my office work on it (most programs for my line of work are really simple word processing programs, spreadsheets and a document preparation/merging program) as well as some gaming. This is what I have found so far. Would it be up to par, spec-wise?

Processor manufacturer Intel
Processor type Core Duo
Clock speed 1.6 Ghz
DDR II SDRAM-533 MHz
Graphics processor Intel GMA 950
Hard drive 100 GB Serial ATA

There's also a built-in microphone and webcam on this lap top, which I'm sure will facilitate the cyb0ring.

Oh, and I know I could have asked this on Tech Support, but I'm pulling a Nexa and decided to post it here.

I always knew that if ever a "move" was named after me, it would be characterized by impropriety and shameless self-promotion.

Nexa

Upgrade past the intergrated video card and make sure you grab at least 1GB of RAM.

You can get way more computer desktop that you can lapptop if it's an option.

Husband and I are going back and forth on whether to get another desktop or not. However, we don't have the space for another desktop computer and I've been needing a laptop for school. Thought I would be done with school a few a weeks ago, but looks like I'll be doing at least 2 more classes.

There are some newer Dell's that have the normal tower hidden behind the flat-panel monitor. They are really clean looking for the amount of space they take up.

***** the lap top, $2000 should cover the cost of a trip for you to come up and see me for a week! Smiley: grin

Okay, looks like the specs of the laptop I'm looking at is this:

Processor: Intel Core Duo T2300 1.66 GHz with Centrino Mobile Technology
Screen Size: 15.4" WXGA TFT LCD (1280 x 800)
Memory: 1 GB DDR II SDRAM
Hard Drive: 100 GB
Optical Drive: DVD±RW (+R Dual Layer)
Integrated Features: Webcam
Networking: Ethernet 10/100, 802.11a/b/g
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
Battery life: 4 hrs
Weight: 6.2 pounds

The weight is a bit more than I'm liking, but can't have it all. Is there anything else I should be looking at?

Oh and Eldy, I'd visit you, but not while your bottom can't control itself. Smiley: grin

I picked up a Dell Latitude D600 with 1.6Ghz, 512Ram, 32mb ATi 9000, 40gig HD, intergrated sound, wireless, ethernet, Dvd/Cd-r, 2 usb's, 1 pcmcia, battery and power supply for about 350$ after tax.

If you spend over 800$ on yours, shoot yourself for being a consumer *****.

At least I didn't ask if she'd let me sit on her. Mind you, if she wants to sit on me, we can talk about the first thing that pops up!

You may not want to get a Dell, unless you want your house to burn down

Dell laptops are just fine these days, it's just the explodeing battery packs to watch out for.

For $2,000 you should be ablet o get a faster processor and a better video card.

Okay, so let's say that I do the economically smart thing and sock some of the money away in savings and I spend about $1,200 on a lap top. What do you guys suggest?

I have a Toshiba Satellite. I love it. You should check it out as an alternative to D'hell.

On that budget, this one:

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=M1210S2&s=dhs

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1210?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~section=specs#tabtop

Except I would step up to the nvidia 7400 graphics card and probably a faster processor if I could swing it financially. You definitly want the graphics card though.
