It looks like I'll be attending school in downtown Chicago starting this coming Spring, but I've already started looking at apartments. I lived in an apartment on campus at my old school, but I imagine that the prices down there will be vastly different than prices in the big city.

So, from your experience, what's an average amount to pay for a one bedroom apartment in the city. For the sake of conformity, let's say that utilities, parking, etc, are not included.

Having never rented an apartment in the city, I have no idea. All I remember is that all of my slack friends in the city lived in rat traps and still had a roommate to make the rent.

I'm not sure about Chicago, but in DC, a one-bedroom with nothing included was around $1200-1800, depending on the area. Most folks I knew had roommates as well. Even with four roomies, a house in Adams Morgan still ran them each about $700.

$650 is the average for a non city appartment here, city center doubles that.

Every apartment my sister and BF, now husband rented near their college in Chicago, got broken in and rob at least once. Robbers even came back a week later to steal the rest of their clothes that were in the dirty clothes pile, the first time. They tried to keep all their cameras and clothes in their VW bus for awhile but lost everything when it burned down on Lakeside Drive.

Thankfully they were able to move into on campus married housing, finally at IIT.

Most of the time they had one other roommate to share expenses. Helps when you have to keep replace Nikon's bodies for require classes.
