Alright now in this day and age money for gas is a big deal, especially when you think about the job you might or might not take, so here’s my dilemma, I have a job that’s 21 miles from my house each way and lets say I make 14 dollars an hour, but I was just offered a new job that will pay 13 dollars an hour but is only 7 miles from the house, So now I realize that I will be automatically losing 40 dollars a pay check, but I will also have less ware and tare on my already old car. So what do you guys think? Also the new job has better "Kick Backs" for making my mark every month and also in three months if I do great they will raise me up to 15 dollars an hour...

An extra 14 miles each way is 28 miles. Assuming your car gets ~24mpg, you're saving $3.84 on gas daily (assuming gas at $3.30 for the hell of it).

You're making $8.00 a day less from the pay and saving $3.84 for a difference of negative $4.66. Any additional savings on wear on the car and commute time probably makes the whole thing a wash.

I'd worry about other job factors than this. Seems rather trivial.

welcome to the world of the adult life. choices, choices, choices.

with your current job what are the chances for advancement
what are the chances of increase pay
what about compensation for milage
benifits (medical, vission, life, etc... 401K)

compair all of that with the new oppertunity and weigh them out. what ever one has more benifits and potential should be the one you go with. all things being equal.
#4 Aug 07 2006 at 12:54 PM Rating: Decent
All things being equal the new job is way better, espically since one I have a new baby at home, and I want to spend more time with her, than on the road. An two the wife said it was a good choice and I figure if she says cool than even if things get a little tight than she will atleast be there with me, not seeing I told you not to take this job. So I guess I got a new job today!!!

Thought I would answer this for a laugh....

with your current job what are the chances for advancement, LOL I've worked the same postion for the last three years, my boss tells me I'm the best there is, and they send the new guys to me to train. Yet there is no where up to go. The new job is just starting so I would be getting in on the ground floor.

what are the chances of increase pay, Once again I have to laugh, I haven't seen a raise yet here.

what about compensation for milage, If only you knew the woman who own the law firm. LOL.

benifits (medical, vission, life, etc... 401K). Medical Way to expensive for me to cover, they refuse to become part of an PPO or HMO, so its basicly out of pocket, Vision is the same thing, Life, yeah right. An 401k, yeah we got one two years ago, They let you invest with out meeting any thing.

Congrats, jademage! I would happily take a dollar an hour paycut for 1/3 the commute.

Same here, especially since I have a 55 mile commute each way.

Its only 21 miles each way but its driving from NY into NJ, So its most of the time feels like well over an hour of driving.

14 dollars an hour?

***** them both, get a part time job and a student laon, go back to school and get a real job.
#11 Aug 07 2006 at 2:58 PM Rating: Decent
I wish I could go back to school, or let me put it this way i wish I had, had a chance to go to school in the first place. Life being as it is, I have two wonderful children and a wife and also an ex wife, dumping everything and going to College would be nice but not in my life time or at least not until the kids get older. An as to why I didn't go to college, I pretty much raised my self and was amicipatied from my parents when I was 13 years old. Not looking for a shoulder to sob on or anything like that, just saying...

Congratulations on the new job.

I would take a small paycut for the shorter commute, especially if quality of life and time with family increases.

jade,

if your under 28 years old, and have never been convicted of anything worse than driving infractions, no dui,s and no drugs.....

the F.A.A. is hiring 1200 air traffic controllers every year for the next 9 years throughout the country. starting pay is in the 60,000 range (30 buck an hour about) and up. male or female, doesnt matter. college doesnt matter, but college will get you extra points on your entrance exam. military time is a plus too.

some community college,s have 6 month programs to prepare you for the test, and the F.A.A. is hiring them first before off the street applications.

its a career, not a job. good health benifits, but the retirement package kind of sucks now. the wench Bush put in charge busted our union and froze our pay too, but that will change in 2 and a half years.

i cant tell you how many people i tell this too, and they just give you a blank look and ignore it. its there for anyone who puts in the effort to get it.

Do you preface it with your usual whining about how much the job sucks and how the aviation industry is going to implode because of poorly trained controllers?

You guys kill me, LOL. I'll try and fill out an online application (if you have any info or want to be on my application let me know through PM), And see where it gose from there. As we speak I have my info in also at the local post office, not because its that great of a job but the pay is there. I can easily do the job and also after 20 years you retire, I would still be in my 40's...just barley but still...

P.S. I'm 28 on the dot, can I still get in?

yes. the age 28 restriction is because of the age 56 mandatory retirement. if you dont have your app in before you turn 29 however, forget it.

you can retire after 25 years of service at any age, or with 20 years of service after age 50. but mandatory retirement at age 56.

ill be able to retire at age 50 with 21 years of service. my brother will be able to retire at age 47 with 25 years of service. he got in right out of college. i worked in the real world for a while first.

the agency is going through some particualrly bad times right now with this addministraitior, but hopefully, this mess will be over in 2 and a half years. it swings to the left and right depending on who is in charge. republicans are all about freezing pay, cutting programs, and doing more with less. the dems are all about creating new technology to make air travel safer, and having staffing necessary to ensure a safe operation.

reguardless of who is in charge, it is a great job. good security, decent pay, and good health benifits. the retirement is seriously lacking now however, but it is mirrowing the real world. most of your retirement in this job now comes from your personal contributions into a 401k plan. the agency retirement is 30 percent of your base pay.

for me, it means i will have to leave south florida the day i retire because i will no longer be able to afford housing, but it will be enough to live comfortably just about anywhere else. or i can sink my entire 401k plan, that took a serious nose dive in 2001, into paying off my house here, and tell my kids they are on their own for college, and never go on vacation or own a new car again.

but enough whinning. its still a good job, and there is more security in this retirement than you will get in the private sector.

it is a job though. you will work for it. those that dont never get passed the training phase.

Complete lack of any education or intelligence required must be a perk, too.
