In the space of about half an hour, it has gone from 90, sunny, and humid, to 72, thunderstorming (I think lightning just hit the neighbors house, that bang was fucking loud), and downpouring. In Central New York State, no less. Scary shit.

Though I'm actually sorta grateful, the heat was getting unbearable with no AC.

That's what happens when ridiculous heat hits a strong cold front coming down. They've been predicting bad storms in the NE area for the last few days now once the two fronts clash. I can't wait for the temperature to drop here in western MA...it's about 100 degrees in the sun and ridiculously humid, it's literally hard to breathe outside.

I love those kinds of storms, but only when I'm home and not contemplating a commute.

Same thing is starting to happen in ohio, 107heat index today. Dry heat thankfully. But, a cold front is coming down by thursday and thats going to cause some pain.

We had a great electrical storm around here a little over a week ago. Lighting was striking every 2-3 seconds or so. We had one strike nearby the house, and the resulting thunder was easily the loudest explosion sound I've ever heard. It was like a bomb going off. When the storm was a little ways off, everyone was out on their porches watching the lightning.

It was pretty creepy, actually.

Yea, I've heard a lot of loud things in my life...but -nothing- comes close to the sheer volume of a lightning strike up close. Had one strike the walkway of my mothers house when I was a kid...was literally about 10 feet away. It deafened me for a short period of time, I'll never forget it. Blew chunks of asphalt off the driveway and everything.

its been high 90's all day with a heat index past 100 and just now a thunder storm is rolling its way in. I got home from swimming just in time. Right now its still far off and the whole atmosphere outside is that dead calm you get before a big storm, but off in the distance you can hear the nonstop rumbling of the thunder. One of my favorite things about summer, so long as Im indoors to enjoy it. This will be the big storm that brings the temps back down to normal, and with the heatwave being as intense as it has been, I will be dissapointed if we dont have a really good light show.

When the heatwave was over in this area, nothing spectacular. All of a sudden it went from 110+ to just 95. There were some thunderstorms from afar, but nothing in my area.

And it's already back to 80. Smiley: cry

So much for the end of the heat wave. Mid 80s tomorrow and high-80s Friday.

Mid 80s is a "heat wave"?

Hmmm...

The best lightning storm I remember was when I was 16, I woke up and half the sky was a boiling mass of clouds with lightning every 3 seconds or so, but the half above me was crystal clear. About an 1 later the storm front passed over our house and my good is scared me awake it was so loud. I lived on an orchard and there was a few charred trees the next morning.

Exact same thing happened here in the Chicago suburbs. Broiling, then super cold rain and lightning all over the place.

Fixed. Wow, that's a lot of lightning out there. And it sounded like it was hailing earlier.

No storms here in Mississippi....just hot hot hot. Usually it cools a bit at night, but it is not the past few days. The other evening around 8pm I drove by a bank that had the temp and it was 104 with the sun mostly down. I am ready for a little fall weather (minus the giant thunderstorms with tornadoes. I hate those with a passion).

I was really disappointed with the results of the storm yesterday here in western MA...it dropped the temp a pretty good amount right before the storm hit, and then lingered around 80 degree's through the evening hours (down to about 76 overnight). The storm was weak...looked like it could've been killer but just moved too fast. Was it the same where you are in MA, DSD? Woke up this morning to a blazing sun and already mid-80's and humid. Yeah I was really bummed. Fpor awhile it got pitch black, and the rumbling was still nonstop, but to the south of us. We never got rain or one lightning flash though. It did drop from 98 to 79, and now we're in the low 80's so it at least cooled things off pretty well.

Husband was driving up from CT and caught a masive storm though out near Springfield. He said in 5 minutes it dropped from 97-75 and the rain came down so hard you couldnt see 20 feet in front of you. But it lasted only 10 minutes tops.

It's so nice here I'm working outdoors. It was insanely hot for about two weeks but apparently that generated enough moisture that we have cloud cover most all day which is very unusual for us at this time of year. Generally it is insanely hot throughout the entire summer and usually well on into October.

This one time, it was really hot, but I went indoors and cooled down

Then there was this one other time when it rained, and I discovered I'm waterproof!

Who'd have thought it! Smiley: oyvey

Another severe thunderstorm watch is up for MA. Hopefully with today's cooler weather (90 degrees as opposed to 100) the storms won't be as severe.

Some sarcasm yes...the part about the cooler weather was. It is still blistering hot in Weymouth, MA.

No sarcasm...there really is a severe thunderstorm watch up for MA.
