I finally grabbed a copy of Galactic Civilizations II, and I must say I am kicking myself for not buying it sooner. At it's most basic level it is a Civ 4 clone, but in space! Research, economy, tech trees, exploration, etc. It's all there, but the cool part is that you get to custom design your own units if you want. Periodically you get canned Ship types and components to play with, so if you don't like A-scoutship_01, you can design it exactly how you would build it. Your colony ships are your "settlers", etc., so if you want an absurdly fast colony ship for some reason, you just go and build it. It's definitly worth checking out if you have not already.

It's been out about a month now, so it's only $39, and I'd say yeah. Plus you can play LAN multiplayer with just one copy i believe

Grrrr... damn you for your slowness, Kao. I was this close to buying that game less than an hour ago and purchased Gangland instead. MOO3 burned me so bad I have been leary of Space stradegy games since, despite how much I love them. Now, even if Gangland turns out to be decent I will be constantly thinking of Gal Civ II.

I hope you are happy with yourself.

I actually did not enjoy GalCiv I or II. The game layout just doesn't click that well for me. MOO2 still has me ruint on 4X games. Nothing has equaled its enjoyability.

It's ok, but why run a space game in 2D? surely they could have managed to work out how to generate a 3d space map by now!!

that was my main gripe, it's no Civ4 which in turn pales in comparison to Civ2.

I like Age of Empires II the best.

Sounds like a blend of Civ and Ascendancy. I still play Ascendancy on occasion. Only space game I ever really enjoyed. I'll consider it, but I'm currently playing around with Heroes V.
