JAKARTA, Indonesia - A powerful earthquake sent a 6-foot-high tsunami crashing into a beach resort on Indonesia's Java island Monday, killing at least five people and causing extensive damage to hotels, restaurants and homes, the president and witnesses said.

People ran up a hill to escape the wave on Pangandaran beach in west Java, a woman who identified herself only as Teti told el-Shinta radio station.

"All the houses are destroyed along the beach," she said. "Small hotels are completely destroyed and at least one restaurant was washed away."

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told reporters that at least five people were killed.

The tsunami followed a quake that struck deep beneath the Indian Ocean 150 miles southwest of Java's western coast at 3:24 p.m. local time, causing tall buildings to sway as far off as the capital Jakarta.

The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.2, the
U.S. Geological Survey said. It was followed by a 6.1-magnitude aftershock two hours later.

Transport Minister Hatta Radjasa said he had heard reports about a tsunami striking two seaside towns, and urged people living on Java's southern coast to move inland in an orderly fashion.

"Everyone should move from the beach," he told el-Shinta.

The earthquake had triggered a tsunami warning on Indonesia's Java and Sumatra islands and Australia's Christmas and Cocos islands.

"There is a possibility of a destructive local tsunami in the Indian Ocean," Japan's Meteorological Agency said in a statement.

The Pacific
Tsunami Warning Center issued a similar bulletin.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because of its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami killed at least 216,000 people, nearly half of them in Indonesia's Aceh province.

On May 27, a magnitude-5.9 earthquake devastated a large swath of Java Island, killing more than 5,800 people.

Some people lost their vacation homes, only five lost their lives.

In a 6 foot tsunami?

How do you die from a 6 foot wave? Sure their home may have collapsed on top of them, but what a weak way to go. Like drowning in the kiddie pool.

Maybe they were debris related, someone gets caught under a car or boat, etc.

Tsunamis can hit a person with a force that varies from a moving car to a moving train.

its not the size of the wave that kills you, but the force behind it along with all the debris it has swept up.

You know, the 5 people may have been children or infirm. I know 6 feet doesn't seem that high, but these folks might not be as tall as the average American.

All I know is I have bodysurfed waves bigger than six feet. I could see the force of the water after the wave crashes moving things like cars and such that could possibly kill a few people. There may also be an undertow of sorts involved when the water flows back into the ocean.

Six inches of water running amok is enough to float an SUV, so it stands to reason six feet will kill some folks, be they infants, infirm or whatever. Imagine that where you sit right now was suddenly filled with six feet of water. My cubicle would be drowned!

/nod Whenever my hubby has to go overseas, he's generally 6-8 inches taller than everyone else. I'm only 5 feet tall and a fast moving 6 foot wave would definitely move me.

Have none of you tried to wade across a fast-moving creek? Water has weight, and trying to move through it takes more effort than trying to move across its surface. A shallow stream can take your feet out from under you pretty quickly if you're not careful.

Second point: a tsunami is not "just a wave". Read up about it, if you didn't bother to do so a couple of years ago when it was in the news for months.

It's not that six feet of water would just suddenly fill your office. It's that a wave six feet high and miles in wavelength will push against your office building, trying to force a way in or around, and just knock it all over if it can't. Think about how heavy a single cubic foot of water is.

..A news respondant located in the tsunami zone Sunday noted that they had been told that there were provisions for the guests staying at the resort in the case of a tsunami. She was told that there as a rubbery dinghy located under her bed that could be used to ride out any fast rising water in the hotel room. To her dismay, she checked in the appointed place only to find that there was no rubber dinghy, but rather the small craft had been replaced by a rubber dinky (*****). When confronted about this problem, resort officals blamed a misunderstanding by the houskeeping staff that was asked to replace the rubber dinghy after the last tsunami occurance.

If you look at the "FEMA for kids" site, you'll see that someone clearly plagiarized material!

Tsumani are not like regular ocean waves, a regular ocean wave that is six feet high, is also about 6 feet wide and travels at about 15 miles an hour. A Tsumani that is six feet high can be up to a 1 mile wide and travels at speeds in excess of 100 miles an hour. Thus, the wave, when it hits shore looks like a six foot high flood that will travel miles in shore due to the sheer mass of water and its speed. Even 2-3 foot high tsumanis have been known to detroy homes and kill people. And certain terain increases the hieght of the water.
