I still won't touch any of it. Never even been drunk. Plan to die that way. I am curious, however, so I get a kick out of the stories.
As a teenager in Alateen, it was hammered home to me pretty hard that, as the child and grandchild of alcoholics, I was at a substantially increased risk for becoming an alcoholic or drug addict myself, so I've always been VERY cautious about the way I expose myself to booze and drugs. At the age of (almost) 32, I can count on one hand the number of times I've been inebriated beyond the "hmm, the bed seems to be floating a little when I lie down" stage of tipsiness. I once did two hits off a joint, wasn't impressed, and decided I could continue my existence quite happily without ever trying pot again (though my husband seems to think we should get high before the Def Leppard concert we're going to in August--and I think he's only half joking.) Beyond that, I've done nada in the recreational drugs department.
What they don't warn you about in Alateen or ACA is the prescription stuff. Oi! INSTANT addiction, I'm telling you. I got Dilaudid ONCE when I was in immense pain due to an attack of gallstones, and I swear to you if someone offered me another hit of that stuff, I'd take it without a second thought. In the course of about five seconds, I went from moaning and writhing in agony, curled in fetal position and BEGGING for relief, to sighing and smiling and never feeling better in my entire life. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, so it's probably a VERY good thing that Dilaudid is not easy to come by.
