just finnished watching it with the familey over the last week.

fished out my EQ cd,s and ALMOST.....ALMOST....started to load them.

after watching it again, it hit me how far games have strayed from what enticed me about them in the beginning. the idea of delving into another world full of new things to explore, and taking a personel journey on a mission to define a purpose for being there. a chance to prove that is where i belonged.

EQ1 hit the nail on the head with the origonal release. differant races with each one having an origonal setting and home to explore. each one with its own story and mystery. each one with its own feel. all connected at some point with the rest.

flash foward a few years........

a butt load of whack-a-mole time sinks designed to do nothing but make us put in our time for some illusionary brass ring they keep dragging higher and higher. not even bothering to give us a differant feel for each race, and just lumping them together in 2 or 3 places that all pretty much look and feel alike.

pretty soon, every one forgets why they started playing in the first place, and gets caught up in the race to be uberness.

progress. sometimes moving foward isnt alwasy better.

I'm going to agree w/ shadowrelm? Oh gawd....

I remember when I first played old EQ - and first got my stupid elf out of that dark, orc-infested forest to the port ... and a SHIP came!

That was so cool (how I grew to hate the boats later). And then I made it to Freeport and went out into the Commons ... and there were LIONS - SPIDERS - AND BEARS (oh my! and the spiders were the size of Sherman tanks).

And then I died... and realized I hadn't bound myself in FP... /sigh.

Anyway, I came to the conclusion that first-time immersion in an mmo leaves a "magic" impression in ones mind. You'll never quite relive it. Shadow, imo it's more this than old EQ's alleged superiority. You can do all the things you said in any game - it just becomes harder to do it the more you play - because the more you play, the more you "know" it's just a dumb Easter egg hunt.
