swash, swash, buckle, buckle...playing with the Pirates...Follow

So, after a weekend of great anticipation, I finally saw the new "Pirates of the Carribean" movie this afternoon.

Whatever it was that made the first movie so charming...wasn't there in this one.

The quips were there, the special effects were there, the gags were there, the physical comedy was there, but it just seemed like it was lacking energy or enthusiam or heart or SOMETHING.

It also fell into the classic sequel-trap of "take whatever worked in the first movie and make it BIGGER" to the point that all subtlety (which, ironically, ends up actually being what made it work in the first place) is completely lost. So something that was amusing the first time around ends up being "Oh, brother!" in the sequel.

Mr. Ambrya compared it to "Return of the Jedi" which seems fairly apt. Trying too hard to be dramatic, trying too hard to be funny, just trying too hard at everything and failing miserably as a result.

In good news, Orlando Bloom finally seems to be becoming a better actor.

I'll give it a 6 out of 10. Which means I'll watch it again if it ever appears to be playing in front of me, but it will never go on my list of "movies I'll pay money for."

I thought it was fantastic. Then again, I go to a movie with little expectations with the thought that it's there for entertainment, not for my personal review for others.

I also thought it was awesome. It was, in my opinion, the best move I'd seen. Davey Jones was probably my favorite character.

Then keep your personal review to yourself. Thanks

Yes, because one word constitutes a review now.

It made me laugh out loud several times. I had to put my head down when the camera started turning with the wheel though. Ugh.

I have to agree it just wasn't as good as the first though. It was good. However, yes, it was missing.... something.

I still don't grok the whole opening scene though. But... whatever. Artistically it was a pretty picture in it's own way.

I think we're all missing the most important part about the movie, the Transformers preview.

they did what all sequals do, uped the body count.

but the story was good, the acting was great, and the supprises were enough to keep you form knowing what was going to happen next before it happened. i loved it.

jack getting his hat back? how many of you saw that comming? and the supprise at the end, nice touch.

Indeed it was.

Anyways, I went to see it earlier today and I agree that it wasn't as good as the first, however it was still fairly good. Some of the little twists and turns I could see coming (ESPECIALLY the final part at the end with Barbossa showing up) but every movie is like that really. Nothing happened that really made me think "ok, why did they do that" which makes any movie good imo. The ending was kind of lack-luster, but lets not forget that they were filming both 2 and 3 at the same time, and the next (final maybe?) will be coming out about this time next year iirc. So, the ending fits perfectly into that. Just sucks it'll be so long for the next since while the ending was kind of lack-luster, it sure left quite a few things open.

Loved it. Saw it a day before everyone else as it needed to be previewed before shown to our audience; nothing like watching quality entertainment in a giant theater, where the only other people there are your girlfriend and best friend.

I think this "missing something" thing is stupid*, and that all of those who fall under that opinion should crash into a gas station and die from a gigantic, baby-killing explosion.

I'm biased.

I hate Ambrya for very little logical reason.

Opinions suck.

9/10

*- (Reasons for why it's stupid will not be discussed because I see no point in laying it out, and I wonder who'll get their feelings hurt.)

I thought the actions was great, but the story was a bit lacking. I figure they'll make up for the lack of story in the third installment. Kind of like Tarantino did with Kill Bill... most of the action in one movie and the bulk of the story in another.

The kraken rocked and the effects for the Davy 'Cthulu' Jones character and his crew were incredible.

I have to agree with Nizdaar on the wheel sequence, my stomach was churning on that one too.

I'm with Chand 100% I think the big problem is the sequel stigma that everyone has.

Has nothing to do with "sequel stigma."

I WANTED to love this movie. I was pumped for it. You could have told me it sucked sweaty donkey dick before I went in and I would have been, "yeah, right, whatever, I don't think so." Especially after I saw Bill Nighy, whom I've loved since I saw "Love Actually" was playing Davy Jones.

Problem was, the movie just didn't deliver whatever it was that made the first one so great for me. I wish I could define what that is, but I can't. This is Not due to any pre-judgement made upon the fact that it's a sequel, but just because it wasn't there, and what WAS there was these tired attempts to rehash everything that made the first one cute and failing. Got a couple laughs from a eunich joke in the first movie? Let's make TEN eunich jokes in this one! Found the rum scene funny in the first movie? Let's hammer rum quips into the script again, and again, and again! Enjoyed an outrageous fencing scene with two people in the first movie? Let's have one with THREE people in this one! And on, and on, and on. It's like they didn't try to come up with anything that was funny and original, they just tried to milk the same old teat until it was sore and bruised by trotting out the same gags again and again.

I wanted to love it. I went in with no pre-judgements whatsoever. It just didn't deliver.

If they had gotten too far away from what made the first one great, you would have a lot of people coming out of the theater disappointed because it wasn't what they were expecting.

I totally understand what you are saying, but a lot of people really do want more of the same.

According to IMDb...
Quote:

190. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) $132,028,000

For the top 250 movies of all time and that would be opening weeked figures too.

I enjoyed it. I didn't think it was anything particularly special, just an entertaining movie. I'd say that the series is a bit overrated in general, but other than the fact that the movie was about a half hour too long, and they tacked on some really lame sexual tension between Keira Knightly and Johnny Depp's characters, there isn't much I can really fault it for. It was worth the money to see it.

I had the relative displeasure of seeing it with a bunch of girls, though. I'm now at the point where if one more person says "Oh my god Johnny Depp looks so good with eyeliner!" I'm going to snap.

It was a pretty brief thing that showed some footage of a Mars lander getting wrecked by a shadowy figure, and then the name "Transformers". I was pretty damned confused by it.

I want to go see it, but I'm cheap. I'll wait until it gets to the military base and go see it for free.

Saw this trailer online for the Transformer movie. Is the theatrical trailer different?

Edit: stupid sticking spacebar

I thought it was good, I’d recommend it to others who liked the first one.
