/dons curmudgeon hat

This morning I woke up at 4 AM. Why? Because of an explosion a block or two away from the house that sounded like something between a minor apocalypse and small thermonuclear detonation happening right outside my bedroom window.

I then couldn't get back to sleep? Why? Because of intermittent clusters of snaps, crackles, and pops that owe nothing to puffed rice cereal.

At 4 f'ucking AM.

I now have a rampaging headache that Excedrin isn't even about to touch, and any chance I might have had to acquire some holiday spirit is completely gone, and I want to literally kill every single person with a match or lighter held to the fuse of a firecracker today.

Happy 4th, as'sholes.

There's laws about that sort of thing after 11pm and before 6am in most places.

Yeah, but they basically said on the news yesterday that the cops don't plan to come out on any calls unless it's an emergency, so while you can complain, it's unlikely the complaint will get any result.

It's been happening here for about a week too, but this was the first time it was significant enough to wake me up from a sound sleep.

Considering here they ignored the law forbidding them to even possess said fireworks in the first place, I don't think they are to worried.

My consolation is that it's overcast and cool today. I have no idea whether it's supposed to rain or not, but I'm really hoping it will.

At 4:40AM I heard the Fire Department leaving the station 3 block from home. Lucky for me I woke up before my alarm at about 4:35AM, so it wasnt a rude awakening. It did however end any chance of just dozing until the alarm actually went off. Bet another dumbass started a grass fire with his bottle rocket.

Last year, my husband found a few bottle rocket remnants on our roof. I'm waiting for the day some numbnuts idiot burns our house down.

I've heard fireworks in our neighborhood, but not near us. Last time I set off fireworks was during daytime.

You ever been woken up by thunder? Ugh... and no-one to blame it on, either.

My dad and I were launching bottle rockets in our driveway once, and the third flew out of control, landing into our garden.

Hilarious.

Oh, look, it's my stalker! Praetorian must really love me to follow me around from thread to thread the way he does. Funny how he never seems to participate in discussions here unless I've first commented. One might thing he didn't actually have anything of use to contribute to any discussions here and is simply fixated upon me...

They been setting off illegal fireworks all up and down our street for a month now. I'll be so happy when the firework stands are closed in the county. Then it's a matter of waiting for the kids to run out of them before we'll get some peace and quiet.

Why am I kidding myself, around here I learn to expect noise to keep me awake year round. Only cold spells keeps the noise to a minum, Just fire engines then as folks try to stay warm, in houses without electricity and heat.

Sounds like a terrible waste of marshmallows, unless they are dipped in diesel and then lit on fire. THAT would be something to watch.

Haha, it is. And we could probably feed about a million children in Africa but it is more fun then sending food supplies. Go to the pier, watch fireworks, then the second they are done you try to be the first one to just pelt someone in the head with a marshmellow ball you have been packing together the entire show.

1000 people on a beach throwing marshmellows is also a good way to pick up teh ladies ^^

I always console myself with the fact that Darwinism will have a hand in matters when morons play with fireworks. I'm hoping for mass bloody arm stumps or at the very least, the loss of many thumbs...Smiley: grin

I would rather watch it lit with something that will burn when lit like that...

Ah the joys of living in a gentrified neighborhood. Unless you bought in here at the market lows, like we did, there is no way a normal family w/ kids can afford our area - we sure as heck couldn't if we had to buy now. GL w/ the noise. Hey, fire back at them! It's the Markin Way!

This is the reason we have our freedom:
England goes to America. They say "Hey, nice place, let's settle here."
Spain is already there, so they beat up the Spaniards, and eventually form the 13 colonies. The years roll by and the Colonists set up their own laws, and get all comfy, but they're still under England's control.

The motherland (England) begins imposing taxes on the 13 colonies for various reasons, including the need to fund the war they're having with the French from 3,000 miles across the sea.

Needless to say the 13 colonies started to revolt against public officials, and they have one thing to say: No taxation without representation. If you don't represent us why should we give you our money?

Anyway, a riot happens, and 5 colonists are killed, so tensions rise like a ****. Colonists and Englishmen start killing each other, it gets ugly.

By this time the English already have thousands of soldiers amongst the Colonists trying to enforce English laws (one of which was the Quartering Act, which said that the colonists were to provide housing for the British, not cool.)

Anyway, to make a long story short, England sends 700 men to concord in order to destroy the Colonists weapons cache, and Paul Revere warns the Colonists, he gives them the heads-up. The British advance on Lexington, and some idiot fires a shot that wasn't ordered, this came to be known as "The shot heard 'round the world."

The Colonists force the Brits to retreat, and thereafter all hell breaks loose.

War everywhere. George Washington rages up the east coast and puts the smackdown on the Brits. Lots of battles occur, such as the battle of Bunker Hill, and the battle at Charleston, etc etc. Eventually the French and the Spanish get our backs.

July 4th 1776 as it becomes evident that the British forces are nearly exhausted, the Declaration of Independence is signed by Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, and John Adams, among others, But the war continues for another 6 years, until finally The Treaty of Paris is signed, and the Americans and the British kiss and make up.

13 years. 11,000 deaths.

Just something we take for granted while we're walking around with cell phones, Ipods, and driving cars that mom and dad bought us.

PS, i bought my own car, thanks.

I have my mom's old 1995 teal Ford Windstar.

I think that we should be grateful for what people fought so hard we could have, and also that the Revolutionary War took place nearly 250 years ago. Imagine what a war between the U.S. and Britian would be like today with our more advanced weaponry and nuclear weapons?
