And you thought the French were anti-AmericanFollow

Nothing compared to the Brits...

Quote:
LONDON (AFP) - People in Britain view the United States as a vulgar, crime-ridden society obsessed with money and led by an incompetent president whose Iraq policy is failing, according to a newspaper poll.

The United States is no longer a symbol of hope to Britain and the British no longer have confidence in their transatlantic cousins to lead global affairs, according to the poll published in The Daily Telegraph.

The YouGov poll found that 77 percent of respondents disagreed with the statement that the US is "a beacon of hope for the world".

As Americans prepared to celebrate the 230th anniversary of their independence on Tuesday, the poll found that only 12 percent of Britons trust them to act wisely on the global stage. This is half the number who had faith in the Vietnam-scarred White House of 1975.

A massive 83 percent of those questioned said that the United States doesn't care what the rest of the world thinks.

With much of the worst criticism aimed at the US adminstration, the poll showed that 70 percent of Britons like Americans a lot or a little.

US President George W. Bush fared significantly worse, with just one percent rating him a "great leader" against 77 percent who deemed him a "pretty poor" or "terrible" leader.

More than two-thirds who offered an opinion said America is essentially an imperial power seeking world domination. And 81 per cent of those who took a view said President George W Bush hypocritically championed democracy as a cover for the pursuit of American self-interests.

US policy in Iraq was similarly derided, with only 24 percent saying they felt that the US military action there was helping to bring democracy to the country.

A spokesman for the American embassy said that the poll's findings were contradicted by its own surveys.

"We question the judgment of anyone who asserts the world would be a better place with Saddam still terrorizing his own nation and threatening people well beyond Iraq's borders," the paper quoted the unnamed spokesman as saying.

"With respect to the poll's assertions about American society, we bear some of the blame for not successfully communicating America's extraordinary dynamism.

"But frankly, so do you (the British press)."

In answer to other questions, a majority of the Britons questions described Americans as uncaring, divided by class, awash in violent crime, vulgar, preoccupied with money, ignorant of the outside world, racially divided, uncultured and in the most overwhelming result (90 percent of respondents) dominated by big business.

If only the British press was controlled by ********* neo-cons like Murdoch...

It is, but that could be said about England too and be correct.

I think that figure is accurate for speaking to people, and more to the point i think the vast majority of Americans don't care either. The most common answer when you critise America is "We don't give a F*ck what you think."

I'm shocked he even got 1% he would be universally mocked if he ever tried to make a public visit here.

Overall generalisations are created by Polls because the answers do not give scope for anything else.

just keep in mind that about HALF of voters didn't want Bush.

But yeah, in my own country's defense.. the whole vulgar, crime-ridden, obsessed with money thing could be said about just about anywhere.... and I'd say is a generalization of the entire human race.....
But I might be wrong... since I've only lived in America...

Hmmmm, all these bitter, whiny "we hate America" posts - not surprising they come from a Frog. After all, what is France if it isn't the biggest never-was-but-coulda-been in history? Well, of course you sit there wallowing in your pitiful self-righteousness. You had to rely on a GIRL to save you from the English. Your revolution was one of the quickest cases of "meet the new boss, same as the old boss" in history. Your Corsican midget failed you. You've had your asses handed to you three times by the Germans since the 1870s - being forced to surrender, having to scream for help, and giving up and being occupied, requiring an alliance primarily funded by and soldiered by Americans to rescue you. Hell, in the Franco-Prussian War, you were trounced by a mere portion of Germany - Prussia! Your empire is gone save for a few pathetic islands. The only segment of your population that's not shrinking is that of Islamic immigrants (who love you so much!). What else is left for you - except to bitterly complain (perhaps the one thing the frog is really good at)?

I'm not pointlessly harrssing you here. There's a reason for bitter, self-pitying blathering. You lost. Your country and culture lost. Your ancestors' dreams of empire - of French political and cultural dominance - gone, shattered. Game over, France! Of course you're going self-righteously snipe away at your superiors - what else is there for you to do?

You had your day in the sun. Ours is coming, too - everyone's is. But you had the misfortune to be born in static, undynamic, rotting country. I pity you. Had you been born into a different France, you'd... oh who are we kidding? You'd still be intollerable. You've always been so, and you always will be.

There was a famous dinner party in the 1700s where European nobles and American colonists were together. I've forgotten the exact details. But the Europeans accused the Americans of being stunted and unhealthy for growing up in an inferior and wretched environment. One of the Europeans was dying of tuberculosis or some such ailment - one was not even five feet tall - none of the Europeans were paragons of health - the Americans at the table were all above average in height - several were over six feet tall - and were quite healthy. Midget European noblemen accusing us of being stunted - we're used to it. Try harder, has-been. Froak!

Oh, evilgnome, you sad little man. You make me laugh, really. Anyway, let's deconstruct all this.

EvilGnomes wrote:

Two posts. One explaining why some French people are anti-American. If you had read you would've seen that it wasn't my point of view, obviously. It was an attempt to explain why some people are like that and their motives.

The second, was a cut-and-paste of a poll I stumbled upon, and which made me smile because of that previous post. How they are "bitter" or "whiny", you tell me.

Could've-been what? Is this the pissing contest again?

Quote:

Yeah, and where's the shame in that exactly? You go, girl...

And please, stop watching Luc Besson films, they are not "historical". They are Holywood. Read a book, just once. It might help.

Quote:
Your revolution was one of the quickest cases of "meet the new boss, same as the old boss" in history.

It was also a point of reference for every single other Human Rights declaration since then. It embodied everything we can strive for in a society. That it didn' work out practically, well thats life for you.

Quote:
Your Corsican midget failed you.

How did he fail? He did what he had to do. He conquered, he lost. Shame about all the killing, but thats what these stupid nation-states did in those days.

Quote:

We didn't lose WWI. And thanks for WWII. Want me to send you a postcard? Oh no, thats right, you had nothing to do with it. You werent even born. Still, claim the credit, it's rightfully yours, obviously. Well done on that one!

Quote:
Hell, in the Franco-Prussian War, you were trounced by a mere portion of Germany - Prussia!

Yes, the shame! The horror! I still wake up at night in sweats about this war. Damn those Prussians.

Quote:
Your empire is gone save for a few pathetic islands.

Good! I guess thats at least one thing they did right. And by the way, if you had been to those islands, you would've seen they are anything but pathetic. They are some of the most wonderful places on Earth. But I don't expect you to know that, since they obviously haven't killed enough people to earn your respect.

Quote:
The only segment of your population that's not shrinking is that of Islamic immigrants (who love you so much!).

Yeah, that would be true if it wasn't wrong. We have the highest fertility rate in Europe. You think it's because of Muslims? Well, show me the stats. See, in France we dont keep track of ethnic roots or religions. We are all citizens of the French Republic. Corny, but at least it keeps us all in the same boat.

Quote:

You should see the Brits. Too hot, too cold, too rainy, droughts, trains, leaves, parking spaces...

Quote:
I'm not pointlessly harrssing you here. There's a reason for bitter, self-pitying blathering.

Yours? Cos I cant remember any post I made that was "bitter and self-pitying". But please, enlighten me.

Quote:
You lost. Your country and culture lost. Your ancestors' dreams of empire - of French political and cultural dominance - gone, shattered. Game over, France!

I personally lost?

Or do you think that I, like you, project my country's present and past achievements as though they were my own?

The people that dreamt of empires were not my ancestors. They were @#%^s that happened to be born within a specific territory. I have nothing in common with them, nor do my ancestors. Dreams of French hegemony are not mine, and were certainly not my ancestors.

Quote:
Of course you're going self-righteously snipe away at your superiors - what else is there for you to do?

Heh. I'm not sniping at anyone, and as clever as Joph might be, I dont know him well enough to consider him superior to me. Yet.

Oh wait. It's the pissing contest again, right? My daddy is bigger than your daddy. Well, your "daddy" doesn't give a sh*t about you. In fact, if you had never been born, the US would be exactly the same place it is today. It wouldn't make an iota of a difference. And you take personal pride in those achievements? You must lead a sad life, mate.

You had your day in the sun. Ours is coming, too - everyone's is. But you had the misfortune to be born in static, undynamic, rotting country. I pity you. Had you been born into a different France, you'd... oh who are we kidding? You'd still be intollerable. You've always been so, and you always will be.

Is this about me, or about France?

You should go to France one day. We have lovely food. We have beautiful girls. We have the South of France, places like Provence, which are not only beautiful, but has amazingly lovely people there. People who only care about making a nice life for themselves and their community. It's a bit of heaven on Earth. I'm sorry if your image of France was tainted by all the crap you read. But it can change. Go there. See for yourself.

And if you are talking about me, then please. You don't know me. You haven't got the faintest idea of who the @#%^ I am. You make a poor judgment based on posts you don't even understand, can't be bothered to read, and that I make when I bored at work. But, at least, i'm glad you think that. i don't want to be "tolerated" by you, to be honest. That I grate you so much is in fact a compliment.

Froak!

Well, it must be great for you feeling so good about what people you have no connection to did 400 years ago. I almost envy you.

See, I haven't got that. I don't take any pride, or shame, in what people did 50-500 years ago. It's not me. It's them. Nationality doesn't mean anything to me. I barely consider myself French since I spent most of my life in another country. And maybe that's why I enjoy poking nationalistic pricks like you so much. It makes me smile. So sensitive about something that has nothing to do with you as a person. Nationalism is last refuge of the scoundrel.

Anyway, I'm tired, and off to bed. Enjoy your paranoia and your pissing contest. And don't worry, you'll find plenty of Chinese people to play with pretty soon. While us miserable frogs are stuck in our crappy country drinking whine in the sun whilst listening to cheesy music with beautiful girls.

But it's ok. You won :)
