A healthy emotional state involves acknowledging sadness as well as joy. Being a black-garbed sad clown in your basement isn't healthy but neither is being a blindly pure-hearted Pollyanna.

Yes, we listen to sad songs because being emotionally healthy is a balancing act. It's not healthy to be depressed and sad all the time, it is also unhealthy to be exctatic about everything. At either extreme you're wasting energy, depression makes you lethargic and inactive, being overly happy leaves you chaotic and frantic.

Sad songs just let us even ourselves out.

What are you calling 'sad' songs?

Most songs that are considered sad are more truly categorized as poignant songs of love.

"I'm depressed because life sucks" is a shallow and emotionally ignorant statement. I wouldn't waste my time on that sort of trash.

Now if my song brought to mind the loss of some great positive emotion, then I would be reinforcing a desire to regain something positive. The sadness isn't negative at all in truth.

I think people listen to sad songs because the want to feel emotion, whether it be happy or sad. In this case sad being the stronger of the two. So yes we are all just a bunch of Emos.
