If anyone played EA/Westwood run Earth and Beyond then they know what I am talking about. EA is a pox on the gaming community.

Dana had some high praise for Warhammer.

What say ye to this development, O Frizzy-Haired Prophet?

I was reading about this on the PvP comics forum. I'm no fan of EA games except for the old Origin games like Wing Commander and Privateer, but I'm going to have a wait and see attitude for now.

Hopefully, I'll still get into the beta at some point to test it out, anyhoo.

Well this is definitely more disturbing than SOE getting the rights to host Vanguard. EA's handling of the MMO Earth and Beyond (which folded 2 years after launch) was disasterous to say the least.

Agreed. SOE at least has a hit-and-miss record. Maybe we'll get lucky and Vanguard will land in the hit category. Personally, I'm putting all my eggs in Star Trek Online. I think it's going to be the "it" game of 2007.

E&B was a disaster. Maybe so much so that they learned something from it.

I doubt it, looking at the companies track record with UO, closure of Westwood, the debacle with Magic Carpet 2 despite Peter Molyneuxs protest etc.

Somehow I feel Startrek Online will end up being the new MxO.

Vanguard and Warhammer are the ones to watch.

Middle Earth Online and all the other ones in development don't seem to have the buzz worth worrying about.

I'm hoping STO will be a decent Sci-fi MMO. There's not many of those out.

Space based gameplay doesn't really do very good MMO's, it's just not really possible to get the right sort of gameplay.

Some of them may just be the "proverbial sleeping giant" though. One of my friends was telling me about this game called Kaos War: Rise of the Fallen which is looking pretty good from what he's showed me and I've dug up... and it is still in early developement really. From what I can tell they are just sarting to skin some of the mobs.

Games.net is doing a dev blog type thing right now, which may bring this more into the public eye some.

Ok, that REALLY sounded like a sales pitch Smiley: lol but like I said, fom what i've seen and dug up so far this game looks promising. Maybe not to top WoW or anything, but it should be a decent MMO if they keep on the path they are heading.

Well for spaced based MMO's you are down to Star Wars Galaxy and Eve Online. SWG is bunk of course. Eveonline was a flawed game upon release however they have done a lot to the game and built a rather nice niche in the MMO market.

The problem with Startrek Online as I see it is that its a failed TV/Movie franchise being developed by a brand new gaming company with not a single title to its name. MMO development takes a lot of money, time and effort. They haven't even gotten past the conceptual phase yet. So either its going to not come out until 2008 or else its gonna be a shoddy cash in on a franchise type game.

I like Star trek don't get me wrong but I have seen enough failed MMO's or MMO's that got bogged down in development hell to see one coming.

EA is historially the kiss of death to good games. E&B is the best example, along with every other game IP they got from westwood.

I'm not hopeful, but I guess I'm still willing to try Warhammer Online.

Well, it's still a little too early to say, but I just recently picked up Eve Online and I'm having a blast with it.

Mostly I'm awaiting Vanguard's release though.

I think Fantasy should be left up to MMO's and future should be left to RPG or RTS lol. I'm still hoping for good things from STO.

So they rush out poor product in order to cash in?

Yeah that hasnt happened with almost every single Star Trek related game out there. Why did Interplay go out of business again? Star Trek is a great series I'm just saying that all signs point to Star Trek Online being teh suck.

Same thing I said when SWG was coming out.

No, Anarchy Online was a very decent game - and was future/sci fi/space. It had problems - but they weren't the "feel" of the game. It worked very well imo.

But EA ... ugh.

i played E&B for a few months, and whie it didnt measure up to other games, it wasnt a bad game. kind of like AC2, just outclassed, not a mess up.

SWG was the end of them. when it launched, E&B lost most of its players.

some things they did bad, some things they did good. their AO like concept of upgrading your ship was kind of cool. it made trade skills actually usefull, adn not just add on content to mess with when you get bored of playing whack-a-mole like most fantasy based games. it really is not that difficult to incorperate trade skills into the basic necessity of the game play, yet, EQ, EQ2, WoW, DAOC, SWG all just seem to not get it. E&B got it, and did a good job with it.

what they lacked, as with D&D online, was something to do when not on a mission or in space going to get a mission. the space stations were kind of cool, but they made the game feel small after a while.

and monsters existing in the vaccume of space? kind of streatched it a bit too far even for sci-fi geeks.

was fun and entertaining for a while. a change from the orc whack-a-mole athon we get in all the others. but they just didnt have as much as the rest and couldnt keep up. AO was already a better game content and graphics wise, and SWG just put the finale nail in their coffin.

ill play it. it showed better than Vanguard in E3, for whatever thats worth.

also, almost forgot, the halloween gm event they had. anyone else think the "pumpkin chunker" just rocked?
