The science wonks at the AP wrote:
LOS ANGELES -- Meet the newest kids in the solar system: Nix and Hydra. The pair of moons orbiting Pluto were officially christened last week by the International Astronomical Union, which is in charge of approving celestial names.

Until last year, scientists thought Pluto was accompanied by only one moon, Charon. But the Hubble Space Telescope spotted the two satellites -- more than twice as far away as Charon and many times fainter.
[...]
Nix was originally spelled "Nyx" by Stern's group. Nyx is the Greek goddess of darkness and Hydra is the nine-headed serpent that guarded the underworld. Pluto is the Roman god of the underworld.

But since a near-Earth object was already called Nyx, the IAU decided to tweak the spelling to "Nix" to avoid confusion.
"Nix" & "Hydra"? I know they were going for a Greco-Roman myth tie-in with Pluto/Charon but... meh. I think they're scraping the bottom of the mythological barrel here. Plus "Hydra" made me think of this.

Time to switch mythologies! They already named Sedna after an Inuit goddess -- time to tap those reserves of Egyptian, Assyrian, Aztec or something else. I'd be willing to donate my old Deities & Demigods to the IAU if it'll help.

Perun (God of storms), Lada (Goddess of beauty), Kupala (Summer Soltice goddess), Syrena (Snake goddess) and Velles (agriculture & water deity) all have promise. At least from a phonetic standpoint.

Dziewona, goddess of maidens and virginity? Marzanna, Polish goddess of death and ice? Dzydzilelya, goddess of love/marriage? Huh? Huh?

Wow... Polish myth is heavy on the XX chromosomes

Apparently, there's already a rock out in space named "Nyx" so, rather than making them change it to Marzanna (which would have been infinately cooler), they just changed the spelling.

Kind of like naming your MMORPG spellcaster "Ghandallph". Smiley: dubious

"Nyx" was going to be the name for one of my female WoW alts, but it was already taken. So I settled on Knyx.

Fascinating, I know.

It's not serious until they start counting the dates over and renaming. See testament in form of the Roman Column donated to the city of Chicago by Mousilini in the 3rd (or 4th) Fascist Year, so sayeth the plaque.

And how can the naming rights not be sold when it involves government telescopic equipment? I didn't even get the spam email opportunity to name those celestial bodies. Now some poor kids have to use the same run down school textbooks.

You could go with Norse deities. When I heard of these two rogue moons I immediately thought of Hugin and remembered Munin.
