I just saw on the morning news that the San Andres Fault line (which runs through LA) is long over-due for a big quake... last time it had a big quake was like in the 1600s >_> I'll try to find a news link in a minute (takes them a few minutes to update their newspage with the stories they just ran and I don't know if i'll be able to find it anywhere else)

[link=http://cbs13.com/national/topstories_story_172182724.html]LA is totally *************

Quote:
The lower section of the fault has not produced a major earthquake in more than three centuries. The new study, which analyzed 20 years of data and is considered one of the most detailed analyses yet, found that stress has been building up since then, and that the fault could rupture at any moment.

"The southern section of the fault is fully loaded for the next big event," said geophysicist Yuri Fialko of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jol

There we go.

Quick now that you can edit titles of threads

Step one: change name to "Californication"

Step two: give snippet of story with a link.

Step three: say "Los Angeles is ************* then add any further content that you wish.

Never say I didnt look out for you Tomec!

Heh, I was expecting they would have it updated on their website by the time the post went through, or maybe like 2 or 3 minutes after... Ya, right.

Don't worry, Lex Luthor has already tried knocking SoCal into the sea. Superman saved the day.

Best as I can recall, 'they''ve been saying that for years. I think 'they' are the same people who are predicting the next Ice Age, the next global impact meteor, and the next cataclysmic volcanic eruption.

Too change the title of the thread just hit edit on the original post and then in the Subject line just make the change. If you dont like the reference to rhcp you can make a Tool ænema reference.

They've been saying the same for the Wasatch Fault or whatever for the last 50 years in Salt Lake City.

Hah! At work we have various naming conventions for our computer systems based on what group uses it and what it's for. Rather then some boring name like RTSBDQ_001 (booooring!), we decided on city names for a particular group (never run out of city names, can you?).

We managed to slip 'otisburg' in there. Always cracks me up.

Yeah. It's the little things.

Actually, in total dollars of damage, there simply is no comparision between hurricanes and virtually anything else. The largest events are very similar in total dollars of damage, but "big" hurricans happen virtually every year whereas "big" earthquakes happen once every 10, 20 years (in US). Yep, they are unpredictable, but the faultlines are long and damage is localized. All in all, the insurance is totally worth it, but I'm really not very worried.

The real reasons we're all screwed:

(1) fatal airborn retro virus
(2) accidental mass sterilization of human males (most likely from a combination of pesticides; exposure through groceries)
(big gap in threat level)
(3) auto accidents
(4) more intense storms from global warming (setting aside for the moment the cause of the increasing temperatures)
...
(25 or so) getting struck by lightning
(50 or so) terrorism
...
(200 or so) earthquakes

Bodhi, I know that's the new Superman, but your avatar reminds me of the cover of "Dear Mr. Henshaw".
