Heard about this quiz on NPR, and the announcer was saying that Europeans tend to score more on the Southern side, since it's closer to an English accent, and that west of Ohio, there is no accent to speak of. He also mentioned that there is no significant data on the Hispanic population and how it's affected the accents, so I wanted to take the test and see how I scored.

31% Dixie. You are definitely a Yankee.

Smiley: laughSo much for my time in the South. Most of my answers, strangely enough, came from the Great Lakes regions, with the notable Southern exception being that I knew what a brew-thru was.

Someone care to explain this one to me? Why would you have a road along a highway? That's wtf the highway is there for!

You often have various industrial parks along highways since living next to a highway isn't prime real estate and frontage roads* provide access to them and other unincorporated areas.

*Our term for them, anyway

Yes, they're called 'exits'. I don't think that's what they mean though, as those are on-ramps and off-ramps, depending of course if you are coming or going.

We don't have roads beside the highways here and our Industrial Parks are in the woods. Go figure /shrug

What do you have right next to the highways? Nothing? Here we have strip malls, industrial parks, etc and the access roads are how we get to those. It is pretty common to take an exit and then immediately get on another road that runs right along the highway, between the exits.

Trees.

Though if you drive long enough I'm pretty sure you will come across a gas station or a rest stop along the way.

huh, I got:

100% northwesterner. Your area wasn't even a state when that whol civil war thing happened, so you can feel free to make fun of the accents and pronunciations of both sides with abandon. In between secretly laughing at your rather silly environmental and fiscal policy, the other states tremble at the awe insprieng civilization and technical prowess stemming from the presence of Microsoft, boeing and Starbucks

Well that's odd. I've lived in New York my entire life, my family is from and frequently visits Ohio/the Great Lakes region, and I've only been south of the M-D three times in my life. Somewhere, though, I started using "y'all". And, being a Red Sox fan, I guess I'm glad I *wasn't* labelled a fullblood Yank.
