Great, now take that as a basis and design a machine to detect the result of the conversion and track/record the resulting product. That's an example of what I'm talking about.

Aren't we already doing that? This is what I don't get. Are you saying you just want things to go faster, like "zomg I wish we could fast-forward science to the endgame"?

Once we have the formula to calculate how many unknown stimuli exist, we will have the blueprints for the most kick *** machine ever to exist.

Wouldn't there be an infinite number of stimuli if we are talking about all of existance?
I have a feeling it's a finite number that can be represented by a formula.

No we aren't. We only move forward on stimuli that we have reason to believe exists, such as magentism, ultra band light, etc. What I'm, theorizing is that existance is not limited to perception, and that we are limited to even imagining X number of receptors that would allow us to fully experience and understand existance. If we could at least determine the formula, we would have a starting point. I think that's the question for the answer of 42.

If a stimuli is mearly some combination of energy and matter intecepted and interpreted by a receptor there should be infinite. Look at quantum physics. Once you get specific enough there's no such thing as finite. Every equation at that level is leaving some factor out in order to work.

If you're really interested in this stuff check out this book.

hallucinogens, is there anything they can't do?

The total number may very well be infinate, but the most important number is the number that it takes for us to answer life's biggest questions.
