The borders are pretty much invisible (unmarked even on smaller roads) so it's no problem to drive over the border to fill your tank.
And why would you do that?
Because in NI it's 97p a litre (about £4.35 or $8.20 a UK Gallon)
In Eire it's 1.1 Euros a litre (about £3.37 or $6.35 a UK Gallon)
On a full 50L tank that's a saving of about £11 ($20.68) per tank.
Sadly, it's not just the little guy that's cashing in:

Fuel crime losses 'total £245m'
Fuel smuggling and laundering in Northern Ireland cost the government £245m in lost revenue last year, according to a new report.
The sixth annual report of the organised crime task force said almost £50m worth of assets and goods were seized from criminals.
Security Minister Paul Goggins said organised crime was not victimless and those behind it would be pursued.
He said everyone was a victim and must play a role in fighting such crime.
The task force also launched a public awareness campaign on Monday to highlight the impact of organised crime.
