In honor of the day, songs about fatherhoodFollow

With a caveat: They need to be generally positive songs or at least speak well of the father figure. No Harry Chapin singing his failed relationship with his son or Everclear going on about how hard it was growing up without a father.

As I was singing in the shower this morning, it occurred to me that the only song I could think of was Dan Folgelburg's "Leader of the Band"
Quote:
I thank you for your music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for your freedom
When it came my time to go
I thank you for your kindness
And the times when you got tough
And, Papa, I don't think I've said
"I love you" near enough...
The fact that I has to sing Dan Folgelburg in the shower aside, there has to be more pro-fatherhood songs than that. So get your minds in gear and come up with some.

Boy Named Sue wrote:
Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew.
At an old saloon on a street of mud,
There at a table, dealing stud,
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me "Sue."

Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had,
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye.
He was big and bent and gray and old,
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said: "My name is 'Sue!' How do you do!
Now your gonna die!!"

Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down, but to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer.

I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile.
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile.

And he said: "Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn't be there to help ya along.
So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's the name that helped to make you strong."

He said: "Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do.
But ya ought to thank me, before I die,
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
Cause I'm the son-of-a-***** that named you "Sue.'"

I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
And I called him my pa, and he called me his son,
And I came away with a different point of view.
And I think about him, now and then,
Every time I try and every time I win,
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but Sue! I still hate that name!

My grandpa was a big fan of Mr. Cash, and used to sing this song to my pop after he got out of the army.

Pop still is known to randomly shout "My name is SUE!".

Oh, my papa, to me he was so wonderful
Oh, my papa, to me he was so good
No one could be, so gentle and so lovable
Oh, my papa, he always understood.

Gone are the days when he could take me on his knee
And with a smile he'd change my tears to laughter

Oh, my papa, so funny, so adorable
Always the clown so funny in his way
Oh, my papa, to me he was so wonderful
Deep in my heart I miss him so today.

And it's fading now
Fading away
It's only a dream

A Scheveningen
A Scheveningen, petit
Tellement fort

La mer du nord
Ou bien les digues
C'est le vent du nord
Qui transperce les yeux
Des hommes du nord
Jeunes ou vieux
Pour faire chanter
Des carillons de bleus
Venus du nord
Au fond de leurs yeux

Mon pere disait
C'est le vent du nord
Qui fait tourner la tete
Autour de Bruges
Autour de bruges, petit
C'est le vent du nord
Qu'a rabote la terre
Autour des tours
Des tours de Bruges
Et qui fait qu'nos filles
Ont l'regard tranquille
Des vieilles villes
Des vieilles villes
Qui fait qu'nos belles
Ont le cheveu fragile
De nos dentelles
De nos dentelles

Mon pere disait
C'est le vent du nord
Qu'a fait craquer la terre
Entre Zeebruges
Entre Zeebruges, petit
C'est le vent du Nord
Qu'a fait craquer la terre
Entre Zeebruges et l'Angleterre
Et Londres n'est plus
Comme avant le deluge
Le poing de Bruges
Narguant la mer
Londres n'est plus
Que le faubourg de Bruges
Perdu en mer
Perdu en mer

Mais mon pere disait
C'est le vent du nord
Qui portera en terre
Mon corps sans Ame
Et sans colere
C'est le vent du nord
Qui portera en terre
Mon corps sans Ame
Face a la mer
C'est le vent du nord
Qui me fera capitaine
D'un brise-lames
Ou d'une baleine
C'est le vent du nord
Qui me fera capitaine
D'un brise-larmes
Pour ceux que j'aime

Then the light begins to shine
And I hear those ancient lullabies.
And as I watch this seedling grow,
Feel my heart start to overflow.

Where do I find the words to say?
How do I teach him?
What do we play?
Bit by bit, I've realized
That's when I need them,
That's when I need my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.
That's when I need my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.

Of course, as soon as I posted that snippet I remembered the lines from The Addams Family movie:

Gomez, gazing at the new baby: He has your father's eyes.
Morticia, smiling fondly: Yes.... Take those out of his mouth.

Edit: punctuation is hard.

Sugarcult's "Daddy's Little Defect"
Quote:

So don't, don't, don't make a sound,
Your father's around (To play with your head),
Gift wrapped guilt-trip kisses,
He left you naked in your bed...

And all I see,
I don't, don't, don't believe,
And what you see is what you get with me,
Wasting all your time,
Wasting all your time...

Going all the way,
Looking so helpless (everyday),
Daddy's little defect,
All the same,
Keep your secrets (yeah, yeah, yeah...)

I suppose that any song by Good Charolette or Everclear is taboo, huh?

Quit whining about your abusive fathers and get some therapy, you pussies!

Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me,
I was the black sheep of the family.
You tried to teach me right from wrong.
Too much wine and too much song,
wonder how I get along.
Goodbye, Papa, it's hard to die
when all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
Little children everywhere.
When you see them I'll be there.
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the wine and the song,
like the seasons, all have gone.

Butterfly Kisses & Daddy's Little Girl. Both considered good father-daughter dance material at weddings. I personally like this old Argentinian/Mexican song (depends who you ask):

Es un buen tipo mi viejo
que anda solo y esperando,
tiene la tristeza larga
de tanto venir andando.

Yo lo miro desde lejos,
pero somos tan distintos;
es que creció con el siglo
con tranvÃa y vino tinto.

Viejo mi querido viejo
ahora ya camina lento;
como perdonando el viento
yo soy tu sangre mi viejo
Yo, soy tu silencio y tu tiempo.

El tiene los ojos buenos
y una figura pesada;
la edad se le vino encima
sin carnaval ni comparsa.

Yo tengo los años nuevos
y el hombre los años viejos;
el dolor lo lleva adentro
y tiene historia sin tiempo.

Viejo mi querido viejo,
ahora ya camina lento
como perdonando al viento;
yo soy tu sangre mi viejo.
yo, soy tu silencio y tu tiempo.

Cat's in the Cradle
by Sandy & Harry Chapin

Not going to quote it, everyone knows the damn song. It can be positive if you look at it in this light: "don't take what you have for granted, nor should you in your quest to provide, should you overlook what's important." I'm using it as my inspiration to find a new job that gives me more time with my girls.

Drift Away
By Dobie Grey

Another good one, but not quite father inspired, but it makes me think of my dad and I fishing for some reason.
