Birth and death in a Wal-MartFollow

#1 Jun 15 2006 at 3:33 PM Rating: Decent
http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/06/15/walmart.baby.ap/index.html wrote:
MACON, Georgia (AP) -- A 27-year-old woman was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison for leaving her newborn daughter in a Wal-Mart restroom last year.

Amy Shorter covered her face after the verdict was read Wednesday, and several relatives cried as they left the courtroom. They declined to comment.

The jury found Shorter guilty of felony murder for causing the baby's death while committing first-degree cruelty to children.

Defense attorney Elizabeth Lane had argued that Shorter did not intend to kill her child.

Lane said Shorter didn't know she was pregnant and panicked after giving birth in the Macon store restroom on August 14, 2005. She left the baby there on impulse, Lane said.

The 8-pound infant died five days later at a hospital.

"I've seen you express remorse. I don't know what was in your mind that day," said Superior Court Judge Byron Smith.

Since we have a couple of women in here that are preggers-

Is it possible to NOT know you're pregnant, even up to birth?

I am by no means the expert... but you gotta be a pretty stupid individual to not notice what... 30+lbs of wieght gain, morning sickness, and the occasional kick. I mean, what, you wake up, your loins are burning and you think you have indigestion?

I'm not a pregnant lady, but I do know a woman that was pregnant and didn't know about it until (if I remember right) she was 6 months into it.

She was a heavy set woman though. That is my guess as to why she didn't know.

Yes, it is possible. Some women are highly active and gain very little weight while pregnant. Also if you are active you periods may be irregular so going 9 months without a period is not unusual, or you could be reversed and have your period monthly all nine months. I knew a girl in school who was a track runner who didnt know she was pregnant until she went into labor, hell the week before she went into labor she was doing hurdles.

Very peculiar though.

I have a very hard time believing that a woman can not figure out shes pregnant even up until labor. The fact that the majority of women I know, can figure out theyre pregnant within three weeks due to the fact that their bodies are acting very different makes me wonder if these women are in total denial, or if they really dont pay attention to their body.

Labor pains may feel like period cramps, but multiply it by 150. Trust me, if you're all of a sudden having cramps that bad, you will call the hospital and tell them you're dying.

In the second and third trimester, your baby has grown big enough to kick your stomach hard enough you can sometimes see the shape of their foot. There's no way you can think its gas.

So no, I dont there is a high possibility that she didnt know. I think she just didnt want to believe it until it was too late.

During my last pregnancy, I didn't know I was pregnant until I was 5 months along. And that was only because I started noticing a bigger belly. I had some pregnancy symptoms, but not really bad. So I assumed I had an ovarain cyst. I had had one of those before, and they can simulate the symptoms of pregnancy. Also, I had several very light periods.

Katie, if your friend was that well honed into her body for being on track, I can assure you she had a clue. No one who keeps their body toned would allow all the things that happen to your body go unchecked. And if she was in shape, she would have to wonder why all of a sudden she was gaining rapidly. Again, I think this girl was in denial.

Yeah, it's usually younger girls - teennagers who don't really know what their bodies are doing yet. You hear it all the time, the girl who gets preggers at homecoming, gives birth at the prom, flushes it down the toilet and goes back out to dance.

She didnt gain much weight at all actually. Nothing that a normal teenager wouldnt gain. Not a friend, just one of many abilene sluts who got knocked up in high school. Was quite a bit of talk about it. No one else noticed she was pregnant either. She just looked slightly bloated, nothing that couldnt be explained on bad PMS or not eating as healthy as she should.

One of my cousins was exactly like that. She was about 5 1/2 months pregnant when she found out she was pregnant. She was a size 0 and with the weight gain, she went to a size 4 so she didn't think much, just that she was gaining the college weight. Some queasiness which she thought was just a stomach bug or something. Still got her periods throughout the entire pregnancy. Went to her doctor for a check up and found out then.

One of my other cousins found out she was pregnant because she and a few others were all bored one day, decided to take pregnancy tests (I have NO clue what possessed them to think to do that), and hers came out positive. Smiley: lol They thought she did it wrong and like 6 blue tests later (and a trip to Planned Parenthood), she finally accepted that she was pregnant.

I can totally see a woman not knowing until she was about 5 months, again if like Nad, it felt like a cyst, or there were not many symptoms. Hell, I still forget sometimes Im pregnant and Im 3 1/2 months along. But once you get to that third trimester, Im sorry, there is no way you cant know something is up. The feeling of your baby moving around, kicking or pushing against you is like no other feeling I've had. And if Ididnt know I was pregnant then, I would think that something was seriously wrong with me!

In sex ed we were able to learn both reproductive systems and that was it. We couldnt ask about sex at all. We werent even able to talk about anything more than kissing.

I know a girl back in VA that was never more than a 2, and now has a giant, bulbous preggo belly. When you ask her about it, she cries and asks why people think she's so fat as to be pregnant. Thing is, her belly button popped out AND her belly is hard and pointy. Her arms didn't get fat, nor her legs. I don't get it. I'm sure in a month or two she'll claim she didn't know, as well.

That you'll have no idea ever of how it feels, and as such, we men must keep our traps shut if ********** due to pregnancy pains occurs, lest we lose our members in a permanent fashion.

Well, that's the gist of it whenever I hear of preggo pains from womens.

I hope never to find out :) I'll just treat the wife (assuming we've tied the knot first) like royalty.
