That nutty W.
Quote:
BAGHDAD, Iraq - President Bush reviewed next steps in the troubled three-year old Iraq war on Tuesday in a suprise visit to Baghdad and a meeting with newly named Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. The dramatic move came as Bush sought to bolster support for Iraq's fledgling government and U.S. war policy at home.

Bush traveled to violence-rattled Baghdad less than a week after a U.S. air strike killed terror chief Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The president was expected to be in Baghdad a little more than five hours.

Bush met with al-Maliki in the heavily fortified green zone at a palace once used by Saddam Hussein but which now serves temporarily as the U.S. Embassy.

"Good to see you," exclaimed al-Maliki, who didn't know Bush was in Baghdad until five minutes before they met.

"Thanks for having me," Bush responded. They smiled broadly and shook hands vigorously in the high-domed marble room.

What is he thinking? Honestly. I have ceased to have an idea of what goes through the man's head. Why show up? Was he hoping to look brave, communicate that the situation isn't really that bad if he's willing to travel there? Open the door to talk of withdrawing troops? What? This man is a total mystery to me. It's like trying to figure out what my cat is thinking when he scratches at the couch, knowing full well he has no claws.

Smiley: eek

Is this the presidential equivalent of getting bored and going road-tripping?

You'd rather the Commander in Chief make decisions about how to proceed without actually seeing things for himself?

I don't see what the big deal is. Clearly the administration is trying to build momentum off of the Zarqawi kill. We want to give as much support and confidence as possible to the Iraqi Prime Minister and his government so that they can take things over themselves and we can get out. The fact that a President with a big target on his head would make such a risky visit shows something.

Is it a safety risk or something to let the guy he is meeting know about the meeting in advance?

While your assumption that you know anything about my train of thought on the subject is charming, your answer lacks meat and is totally off-base. If you think people are upset that Bush is making decisions about Iraq without knowing what the situation is, you are truly sleep-deprived. It's the fact that he knows exactly what it is and continues in a holding pattern that's alarming. I'm just not sure what he hopes to accomplish by this. If, as you infer, it's pretty much a PR move, it's a pretty senseless one.

Let's see..."Tuesday's trip came as Bush is trying to recapture support for the Iraq war amid a positive week of news that included Zarqawi's death and the filling of the most important seats in Iraq's Cabinet."
And PR move.

Thank you for your hostility in these flatulent times.

I would like to expend the hand of friendship from my fellow Amoebas to your brave and tactile contaminants.

It is many long months since we liberated your country from the tourist regime of Saddam Hoosain and his oppressionalistic regime. I know that many of you have faced trials and trapeses at the hands of violent and evil people. But we won't be here forever.

May you continue to prosper and rejoicerate in the fresh breath of democracy, and keep faithful to our Christian cause. I will shortly be accompanying Prime Minister Bin Laden to the official openification of the new McDonald's tm Abu-Gharaib theme park, then returnifying to the United Slates of Andromeda.

God bless all of us, and God Bless Angelica

I'll be sure to let him know that a translator in an inner city hospital doesn't think the trip was worth it.

Christ, Sassy. You haven't gone to the doctor, yet? Let me explain something to ya, kid: Bush is working for the good of his party come mid-term elections. Google it. I swear they happen.

Were you going to vote for him anyways? Oh wait, you can't.

Maybe drop in an application for his PR rep?

Personally, him showing up means more than him not, so its a plus. Maybe not an enourmous plus, but better than hanging out at Camp David. I seem to recall a thread ******** that he wouldn't go over there and was on vacation too much.

Meh.

I think this is a wonderful idea and I'm behind it 100%. The President should make public showings like this all the time to drum up support. Since he's already in Asia, Afghanistan should be next. Then a layover in North Korea so he can meet Mr. Il. Once back in the west, Argentina and Cuba would make excellent photo opportunities.

Cutting-edge PR plan, that, but I suppose it's better than nothing at'all. Smiley: laugh

Edit for clarification: If you mean I can't vote for Bush because he's run out of terms (Thank Bob), then you are, of course, right. If you mean I can't vote period, well, then, sorry to scare you, Joe American, pero yo puedo votar en su paÃs con todos los derechos!

Bush is a Texan. They stole the idea of Machismo from the Mexicans and stuffed it in a 10-gallon hat. He's just trying to say he's got big balls.

And she's got big balls
But we've got the biggest, balls of them all!

Okay, if he gets killed, mea culpa.

But I still feel pretty comfortable saying that it won't amount to jack.

Pretty much. All they were talking about on the news while I was getting ready for work this morning was the tropical storm hitting Florida.

Oooo, a rain storm, with some wind!!111

Joe American? Give me a fu'cking break. I know more hispanics/latinos/whatever than you do. Don't give me that lame "We're Brown, we're proud" crap.

When in trouble, always default to race. It's a good card to scare off whitey.

I would only care if Bush gets killed b/c most of my family lives in the DC suburbs. Of course the visit itself won't amount to jack, or at least not more so than if done via teleconference, as originally planned.

My whole irritation with it is that it's an empty move with no real impact, made to look as if he's actually doing something when all he wants to do is stall. If anything, it smacks of a surprise visit to your dorm room by your mother, and frankly, the image of us as foster parents probably isn't the smart thing to keep reinforcing.
