I don't own an Ipod, due to the fact that I have an inherant lotheing of anything apple related. Mac = evil. Just look at quicktime!

That being said, I do know a fair amount about the blasted things. Personally, if I were going to buy an MP3 player right now, i'd probably go with the creative labs Zen vision M. It's not quite as capable as the Ipod in some respects, but it is easier to use in my oppinion. http://creative.com/products/product.asp?category=213&subcategory=214&product=14331&nav=1

Of your Ipods, You basically have 4 types. The Newest ones, the Ipod video, which will run you around $400, The standard Ipod 30gb will run around $350, Then you have the 5GB ipod Nano, which is a smaller version of the Ipod, they run around $200 and are more portable. Finally there is the ipod shuffle which is a completely usleless piece of crap that is just a memory stick with a random MP3 player built in.

There are hundreds of dock accessories to use with Ipods. most of them consist of a cradle, a charger, and attached speakers of some sort. They all work, if you get one of the high end ones, you're basically just paying for better speakers.

As far as getting fromt he Ipod to the car, if your car is new enough to have an audio line in port, you cna plug in directly. (2006, 2007 models generally, or aftermarket car sterios) Otherwise, your best bet is the RF transmitter. Belkin makes one that works with any MP3 player. You plug it into the headphoen port, then tune your car sterio to the frequincy it is broadcasting at. The range is very short on it, but they work pretty well.

The main consideration for picking an MP3 player are how big is your music collection, and will you have a need to carry around video files? If you don't ned video, and can be content with only a few hours of MP3's, the Ipod Nano's are pretty nice, although evil by default.

DSD, if you are planning to spend that kind of coin on him, you should get him a tool chest. The good kind. Like these or this, my favourite. If he doesn't want it, I'd be more than happy to provide sexual favours for one.

Any man who doesn't like that for a gift is either gay or... just gay.

PS. Enter to win one for him here.

Wow, wouldn't mind having a few of those for my garage.

My wife's 1gb Nano was $150 and works well for her, but we don't own much music. I use my PSP as a MP3 player and it works fine for that but again, we don't have many CD's.

I have a 1956 Dodge Coronet that is going to require a lot of wrenching on if it will ever get on the road. Among things to be done is a motor swap and some body work, not to mention all new interior.

My tools are all piled in a single massive toolbox, not really organized at all.

Sounds like a cover story.

Snap-on Tools. Sorry but I can't have anything that references a detachable *****.

I'd link the actual pics of it, but it's very depressing to look at. Lots of fu[Aliceblue][/Aliceblue]cking work left on it.

I found a decent alternative to the mega-box. If you commandeer an old vertical 5 or 6 drawer dresser, they make a decent makeshift tool chest. That with nails in the walls and rafters to hang the rest of your larger items and you will be organized in no time.

Why yes I do. That crap is on PBS in this country. Do you know how hard it is to watch PBS? That damnable channel still replays the Lawrence Welk show!

Sh[Aqua][/Aqua]it, when I worked master control for a PBS station, Tuesdays were the highlight of my work week because we'd show Red Green. Of course, that was the first season or two before they started gaying it all up.

But, even then, when I'd see Red at his workbench rewiring a lamp or at his desk tying flies, I knew to shut up and listen because I was standing before the font of manly wisdom.

Please don't tell me you were one of those bastards that would air the show only to splice in bits of a fund-drive. Are there any weeks worse than PBS or NPR fund drive weeks?

If he doesn't have an iPod then go for that, he'll love it. The nano is just about right for most people.

Also, my PSP has also been quite the fun gadget to play with. I'm always recording shows so I can watch them later and the games are... well... getting better.

If you're father will enjoy that gift, I think I love him a little bit now. Think he wants a spare daughter?

No, our market was a small one, mostly funded through state government and college grants and business underwriting. But those pledge drives account for over 25% of the money PBS receives, more than federal funding provides (20% between the Corporation for Public Broadcasting & various grants). So don't expect to see them go away any time soon -- they need them to survive.

Just for trivia, total government spending on public television (federal, state, local, state college monies, grants, et al) probably amounts to around 40-45%. Add in pledges and the other 30-35% is corporate underwriting, a limited take on character licensing, private endowments and the like.

The local PBS and Colorado Public radio both have my credit card on file. They even suckered me into donating twice what I usually do last year Smiley: motz

Every time they call me to ask me to renew I get the feeling they need my money to survive. I guess I am a sucker, anyone want to get me in on the ground floor of a pyramid scam?

Thank you guys for all your help. I ordered him the 2gb Ipod nano in black
and added the FM transmitter. I got standard shipping, so it wont make it here for Fathers Day, but it's encompassing that, his birthday, and ten years since we became an item. So Ill give it to him when it gets here. I hope he likes it. At least until he sees the bill (giggle)
