Fathers day is around the corner and in a couple weeks my husbands birthday is coming too. I always have a really hard time figuring out the perfect gift for him, and have been pulling my hair out the past couple weeks wondering if there was anything out there that was perfect for him. Unexpectedly,he gave me the perfect idea in a casual conversation yesterday. Hes been thinking about getting an Ipod. Neither of us have ever had one, and while I know what they do, I dont know anything more than that. So my question to you guys is, do any of you know of a decent Ipod that is not insanely expensive? Im a woman on a budget, and I know getting one of these things will go over that budget anyways. But he's worth every penny, and I think it would be something he would really appreciate.

Ive got a Circuit City down the road from me, and I can always buy from the net as well. So any ideas or raves about an Ipod you've used and enjoyed would be really helpful.

I'm getting my father Godzilla vs. Mothra on DVD, but I realize that's not for everyone.

Just make sure that it has that Attachment that lets you play the songs on your car stereo via radio signal.
That thing RULES!

I have the 30G Video iPod and I love it. It says it holds 7500 songs, photos, video and I also use it as a portable HD (I transfer a lot of work between the house and the office)

I would recommend getting the Universal Dock, it's a neat little dock that I have hooked up to my computer, home stereo and my TV so I can quickly download burnt albums, listen to all the music on my 1000 watt Home Theater system and watch the movies I have downloaded to it on my TV. Plus it charges it at the same time without scratching the back of the iPod (notorious for scratching)

I would recommend ordering it straight from Apple, you can get a free laser engraving just to make it a bit more personal.

The only downside of it, the headphones suck as[red][/red]s.

DO all Ipods come with this or only specific ones? This is what he was thinking about. Downloading the music and attaching it to his car stereo

It's a separate component you buy. It attaches to the iPod, not the car. Completely wireless. It's actually pretty nifty, and not terribly expensive.

It's just a transmitter really that sends the music to your car stereo via an FM radio signal.

I think that they may usually come as a standard accessory with them. not certain though.

Basically, you Give it a station setting on the Ipod-thing, then if you tuurn to that station on your sterio it plays it. I hear that it has trouble around big cities though.. because most frequencies are used up.

/nod Husband got me the 30G Video iPod for my birthday and I love that thing. What do you think your hubby would do with his iPod? Would he hold pictures, shows, music, etc. on his iPod or would he use it for strictly music?

Personally I like the casette adapter (it has better signal transfer according to tests). I've got a Nano and have loved it. Not too expensive, and so far it seems to do all the same things as the bigger ones (so, far).

The only problem that I've had, has been setting up playlists, but I haven't put that much effort into it to be honest.

I would pick up a case for it too. These things aren't cheap, so you want to protect them. A good neoprene case goes a long way to survivability in minor drops and bumps.

You guys are dealing with a complete ignoramious here when it comes to these things. This adapter, that would be able to hook the Ipod up to the car stereo, what exactly is it called?

Do the other MP3 players have a broadcast transmitter available? I'd like to see an MP3 player in my possession one day but I've heard enough ill of the iPods to make me wary of them.

One of the common ones is the iTrip.

One thing though, the iPod almost becomes a way of life and you can spend hundreds of dollars for accessories. I'd get the iPod first and then let your husband figure out what he wants to do with it. Look through the Apple website, that will give you an idea of which models you might want to get for your hubby. But I do have to tell you that I love my video iPod. TV Shows on a tiny screen FTW!

It is called an FM radio Transmitter. Also, if you want a specific one, look from the Garmin iTrip. That one is nice as it charges your iPod while broadcasting the audio...runs about $40.00

Here is a short list of what you'll want to get to start with

-the iPod (nano 2GB will run you $199, 5g 30GB will run you $399.99) I would start with the Nano to see if he even likes it

-a case - I like leather myself...find something that has good screen protection

-car charger/integration kit the iTrip is probably the easiest way for you to go, even better would be a full integration kit, but those run anywhere from $99 - $199 installed. I personally hate the FM transmitters and find their quality to be lacking

might want to also think about a decent set of headphones, just in case the ear buds supplied are not comfortable for him

Good luck!

Joph,

You can get a broadcast trasmitter for any device that as a 1/8" headphone adapter.

ok last question. Many of the sites linked here are from Itunes. Is it a better bet for me to buy from there, or would I have a better chance fo getting what I need from somewhere like Circuit City? I have a friend who works there so I could have him help me without the worry of him trying to pawn more on me than what I need
#19 Jun 12 2006 at 10:14 AM Rating: Good
They are the same price everywhere. The only advantage of purchasing direct from Applie is you can get free laser engraving to personalize it. If you don't want that then just buy it where ever you want to.

***** itunes. Any songs you pay for from there can't be burned onto a cd, only played on your ipod. Also, get him and ipod nano. Smaller drives, thinner, cheaper, but still probably more room than he'll use. Oh, and make sure he knows that he's got to treat it super-delicate, because the faces scratch very easily and then it's hard to read.

I haven't had any problem doing that. Have they changed something recently? Mind you, the last time I bought anything off iTunes was about a year ago.

my husband downloads and burns cds from Itunes all the time. Thats why he thought an Ipod would work better. He could carry all the tunes he wanted with him in one little device instead of multiple cds
#24 Jun 12 2006 at 10:27 AM Rating: Good
Look at the Nano 4GB...with his music and what not, he may need a bit more space...if he has large hands, skip the nano and go straight to a 5G (Video) iPod.

I have medium sized hands, and my wife's nano feels way to tiny for me to use comfortably.

iPod nano - very fragile, dinky and neat - definitely a girly gadget IMHO

I have 60Gb - already 2/3rds full but robust and versatile, vid quality is ace.

As for iTunes protection. Technically you can burn purchased tracks 5 times.
Workaround is burn to CD, import CD as mp3s and deleted purchased files. Voila.
I hear some people just bittorrent mp3s anyway, allegedly Smiley: sly

FM quality is crap. If you have a cassette player in the car, get a cassette adapter.
If you can run to the 30 or 60Gb vid iPod, do that, and Apple laser engraving is stylish and a nice personal touch as a gift.
