Territorial N.J. cat proves his mettle by chasing black bear up tree - twice

WEST MILFORD, N.J. (AP) - A black bear picked the wrong New Jersey yard for a jaunt earlier this week, running into a territorial tabby who ran the furry beast up a tree - twice.
Jack, a seven-kilogram orange-white cat, keeps a close vigil on his property, chasing small animals when he can, but his owners and neighbours say his latest escapade was surprising.

"We used to joke, 'Jack's on duty,' never knowing he'd go after a bear," cat owner Donna ****** told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Friday's newspapers.

Neighbour Suzanne Giovanetti first spotted Jack's accomplishment after her husband saw a bear climb a tree on the edge of their northern New Jersey home's back yard on Sunday. Giovanetti thought Jack was simply looking up at the bear, but soon realized the much larger animal was afraid of the hissing cat.

After about 15 minutes peering down at the cat from the tree, the bear descended and tried to run away, only to have Jack chase it up another tree.

At this point ******* who feared for her cat, called Jack back home and the bear scurried back to the woods.

"He doesn't want anybody in his yard," ****** said.

Bear sightings are not unusual in West Milford, which experts consider one of the state's most bear-populated areas.

Heheh, go cats!

Our cat HATES dogs. One day I was in the front yard, and a dog - a cocker spaniel/golden retriever cross - that had clearly just escaped - saw me and ran up to me. The dog was very friendly and just wanted to say, "Hi, I just escaped, I'm free! Look at me!"

That didn't matter to our cat. A dog had invaded his territory.

He pounced on the dog and dug his claws into the back of its neck. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I would not believe what happened next. Yelping - almost shreiking in terror - the dog ran in circles around the yard, with the cat riding him like a little jockey!

After several circuits the cat jumped off, and the dog took off down the street going "AY! AY! AY! AY!" Poor pup - I assume he went home and never ran away again.

Little of both. Cat's obviously connected, and the bear knew enough to go along with the program.

It amazing how confident some of the smaller animals can be. I have a minature schnazure who is maybe 15 lbs, and she doesn't think twice about going after large dogs, deer, and hell even garbage trucks =p

Cool story though, I would have loved to see some pics from that little escapade.
