BOLIVIA'S Leftist President, Evo Morales, took a first step yesterday toward handing over a fifth of the country's territory to poor farmers.

Mr Morales chose the eastern city of Santa Cruz, the wealthy landowners' power base in Bolivia's agricultural heartland, to award 60 titles to 3.1 million hectares of former government land to some of the poor peasants who support him.

"The historical enemies of the poor must accept this land revolution," Mr Morales said at a ceremony in a square packed with thousands of indigenous people.

Viva!

Hand over some of the property from the wealthiest to the impoverished farmers?

Ok, but I don't know what kind of crops they're going to raise in New York city and LA.

He stole that bit from Benito Juarez.

On a side note, I'm sad to announce the election of Alan Garcia as Peru's next President.

Quote:
According to an official inquiry, an estimated 1,600 forced disappearances took place during GarcÃa's presidency. His own personal involvement in these events is not clear.

Garcia left the country with hyperinflation, isolated from the international financial community, left the country with reserves of minus US$900 Million, continuous bombing and violent attacks by a rising Shining Path terrorist group, great increase in poverty levels and an electric train multi-million investment that was never finished.

What the article negates mentioning is that the funds somehow disappeared, and that Alan and his wife later moved to Paris, to one of the nicest neighborhoods, and sent both their daughters to the Sorbonne.

Way to learn from your mistakes, asshats. Smiley: mad

Ha, we're such conspiracy theorists in my house that my sister and I immediately told each other it was rigged by the U.S. I even mentioned it to Joph this morning when I called to ***** about it after hearing the results on NPR, and was met with silence.

Wouldn't be the first time, and I'm sure it's not the last. It would have been nice to have Ollanta in place, but Hugo gave him the kiss of death when he turned the fu[Peru][/Peru]cking Eye of Sauron on him. Damn 'Bringers of Democracy'! Smiley: mad

In my defense, I was asleep at the time of the phone call Smiley: grin

But you wouldn't expect us to sit by and let another South American nation fall into the Chavez Socialist Bloc, would you?
