NEW YORK (AP) -- Years after she first emerged from the Batcave, Batwoman is coming out of the closet.

DC Comics is resurrecting the classic comic book character as a lesbian, unveiling the new Batwoman in July as part of an ongoing weekly series that began this year. The 5-foot-10 superhero comes with flowing red hair, knee-high red boots with spiked heels, and a form-fitting black outfit.

Smiley: jawdrop

I honestly never saw this one coming. Makes you wonder how Batwoman and Poison Ivy will fight......Ummm.. Smiley: blush

I don't get it. What is supposed to be the target audience? Were 17 year old guys just not liking the straight Batwoman enough?

If I read the article correctly, there hasn't been an active Batwoman character since 1979, so there's nothing for the current 17-yr-olds to like or dislike insofar as the current comic run is concerned.

And what straight male doesn't like lesbians? I mean, we have one major thing in common right off the bat- we both like women :)

If batwoman is lesbian, she's lesbian. She can't be expected to change her sexual orientation just for some comic.

I just thought I should point out that Batwoman and Batgirl are two different characters.

There have always been rumors of homosexuality in Batman comics. Batman and Robin were rumored to be more than a team...

If I wanted to look at lesbians go at it, I'd look up ****; and even that gets hella-boring.

This looks like it's just some publicity stunt; like when they made Willow lesbian in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" or when Xena and Gabrielle decided to become a couple in "Xena".

I would've preferred a new character with said orientation versus grabbing Batgirl, making her into Batwoman, and changing her orientation. That's just dumb.

They should keep the outfit and boots but make Batwoman herself look like Ellen DeGeneres.

I agree, E_odus, to a point. The thing is that if they had created a fresh lesbian super heroine (or would it be hero, if she were butch?), there would be little driving force to read it other than that it's a DC comic. Putting the Batwoman's name on it gives it that much more reason to at least pick up the first issue. They could have done this with the Huntress, Supergirl, Hawkgirl, etc, they just are using Batwoman because there hasn't been one for 27 years so there's an excuse to re-image.

(and just to make sure it's understood, they didn't take batgirl and re-image her into *****-batwoman. They took the long dead 1979 batwoman and lezzed her out.)

I just wish they'd get a new artist. The art in DC comics has sucked for longer than I can remember.

Sooooo... they're trying to turn the Batman comics into a reincarnation of Will & Grace?

Actually, Batwoman and Batgirl are two different people. Batwoman is Kathy Kane, while the first Batgirl was her niece Betty Kane, and the 2nd Batgirl is Barbara Gordon, Police Commissioner Gordon's daughter. /fanboy

I do agree that they're just trying to capitolize on the sensationalizm by turning Batwoman into a ****, especially since Kathy Kane had a massive crush on Batman for years and years. Anyway, here is a picture of the modern Batwoman if anyone is interested. I guess she managed to move on from Bruce Wayne's inattentions. [:eyeroll:]

Correct. **** Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake, in that order. (As infamous as it was, letting the readers kill off Todd was genius)

I just hate it when they take an established character and alter their entire backstory completely. I wouldn't like it any better if they turned Supes gay. =P

I knew about Barbara Gordon, but I read this off of the cited link:

Quote:
The original Batwoman was started in 1956, and killed off in 1979. The new character will share the same name as her original alter ego, Kathy Kane. And the new Batwoman arrives with ties to others in the Gotham City world.

"She's a socialite from Gotham high society," DiDio said. "She has some past connection with Bruce Wayne. And she's also had a past love affair with one of our lead characters, Renee Montoya."

And I guess it threw me off as I thought she was the same Batwoman as the original. ((By some weird "HA! THought I died, huh?" twist of fate.))

This isn't an "established" character. Very few people remember Batwoman. This isn't Batgirl, Barbara Gordon or Cassandra Cain. This is a throw away character who's sole claim to fame is the Bat prefix on her name. Not only that, it's a whole new person. The original Batwoman died in 1979, long enough ago that no one cares. If there are more than 5 Batwoman fans in the whole world then I'd be blown away.

It's just to test the waters for the "Batman in Robin, secrets of the dark cave" series targeted at gay kids.
