HILLSBOROUGH, North Carolina (AP) -- Just as commuters on a busy highway were driving east into the rising sun, a blinding rainstorm hit, triggering a series of wrecks involving more than 80 cars, trucks and buses, officials said.
Thirty-four people were hurt in 44 collisions Wednesday along a five-mile stretch of Interstate 40, the State Highway Patrol said. One man was in serious condition after his minivan crashed into a Greyhound bus, but he was expected to survive.
Most of the other people involved had bumps and scratches, troopers said.
Troopers cited the weather and volume of traffic on the highway about 40 miles west of Raleigh as factors in the crash. That stretch is traveled by about 83,000 vehicles a day, according to the state Department of Transportation.
Some cars and trucks ran off the road or crashed into the cement barricades between eastbound and westbound lanes. Others spun around in the road, and a couple of tractor-trailer rigs turned sideways across several lanes of traffic.
