Reading gbaji's thoughts on torture makes his stance on date rape become much more clear.
Ah... So it's somehow *wrong* when talking about legal responsibility for actions to actually use the correct legal definiotions for those actions. That makes so much more sense!
I know that we live in a world where it's become commonplace to use exagerated labels for things purely to increase the impact of what we say, but it's even more scary to me that so many people don't even realize when they're doing it. And worse, debase people for committing the horrible crime of *not* participating in the mass media circle jerking exageration game?
Look. I call it abuse instead of torture because that's what it is. Others call it torture instead of abuse because torture is a stronger word, so it makes their position seem stronger. Which rationale seems more "honest" to you if you were to look at this objectively? It's not really that hard. I'm frankly amazed that people can't get this. There are specific definitions for things. Insisting on using the wrong ones doesn't make you more right, or your arguement stronger. It just makes you one voice in a sea of ignorant voices.
