A house without AC?? /boggle

I can't even imagine such a thing.

I grew up in a house without AC in Arkansas. I had no idea that it was even hot in our house and I didn't even have a box fan in my room. None of my friends ever wanted to do anything at my house so all get togethers were at other places. I found out a few years later that they couldn't stand it because it was hot as hell in our house. The last few years of high school we had a "water cooler" if any of you southerners are familiar with that term. I don't know if it has a better name, but it is similar to a window unit air conditioner.

About 3 or 4 years ago I was in subway and a lady came in just drenched with sweat. This was around the end of april/early may. She was amazed at the heat and asked us if it was always that hot down here. Turns out she was from Minnesota and was just passing through but had no AC in her car Smiley: laugh

It's not the heat so much as the humidity to me. Though, to be honest, I prefer it to be about 70 outside.

/nod I'll take 105 degrees with no humidity over 90 degrees with humidity.

Debalic, is there a reason you scrolled all the way down to the colour "black" to break the swear filter? A little Freudian ***** envy? Smiley: dubious

Scroll? I type out the markup by hand, and have always used black by default to break the filter.

Anyways, I much prefer winter. I spent all this past winter walking a mile or two into and across town almost every day. Coldest I saw was 3F one night that I was out. It's kind of like an adventure; getting all bundled up beforehand, trudging out into the night in a foot of snow, all that.

Around here, folks start to complain about the heat when it gets to 78 (or they go to the beach). I don't know too many people with AC either. Usually a fan does the trick.

We pay for it in real estate and associated prices (which is to say, everything - gas, food, clothes - everything is more expensive when the base price of running a business is more expensive.

And worse - we get spoiled, so that we can't think of any other place acceptable to live...

...sigh... Life sucks when it's good, eh?

On days like today, Thumbelyna with the sweat staining my bra, I miss Lemoore. Then I remember the months of Tule Fog.

Jonwin just put ac unit in bedroom window. If we ever win the Lotto, the first think I'm going to do is move into a house with central air.

We had a swamp cooler in a place we rented, when I first got to CA. Mix with a carpet that was used as a bathroom by former tenants dog and Sulfur water and I was glad to move onto the base.

I was just outside trying to catch fireflies while wearing a sweater. This was helpful because the mosquitos couldn't get me through the wool!

I. Hate. Cold.
The only things that make cold weather bearable are high-heeled boots and Christmas. ***** sweaters and hot chocolate. I'll take exposed, glistening skin, ice cubes and the feeling of the sun warming my body any day.

And that's why I believe in Bob.
