Watching Lost has totally ruined Merry's character in the movies for me. Now all I see is a washed out druggie rock star babynapper.
As I understand it (and this could be totally off) the game was first envisioned to be Middle Earth Online. At some point (I think it was a licensing thing) they got the licensing for LoTR and changed the name.
My understanding is that the game content is now based on the movie, versus the contents of the books.
Somebody correct me if they know otherwise.

LotRO is set during The Fellowship of the Ring after Frodo and company leave The Shire. Players will be able to meet the characters from Tolkien's story, including some of the Fellowship. The four playable races will be Dwarves, Elves, Hobbits, and Men. LotRO is explicitly based on the books, not Peter Jackson's adaption in movie form.
