Yes. That is the way to do it. I learned this from my wife's parents. I'm sure I'm just a dolt, but I'd actually never thought of it before.
Reminds me of what my roomate from India said (back in 1997 when I had roomates). He asked why we had prositutes in the US. He said in India, girls become prostitutes to feed their families - but he had found out that (in general) we don't have starvation here. I personally had no answer but one of our friends said it was due to drug addiction.
