The American Civil Liberties Union is weighing new standards that would discourage its board members from publicly criticizing the organization's policies and internal administration.

"Where an individual director disagrees with a board position on matters of civil liberties policy, the director should refrain from publicly highlighting the fact of such disagreement," the committee that compiled the standards wrote in its proposals.

"Directors should remember that there is always a material prospect that public airing of the disagreement will affect the A.C.L.U. adversely in terms of public support and fund-raising," the proposals state.

Given the organization's longtime commitment to defending free speech, some former board members were shocked by the proposals.

Please let this be a cunning PR ploy. Please please please please.

I hear it was ok, but I didn't go :)

I'm really not an *** that would't have stopped to have a beer with you, as the Boston people can attest.

While I realize you probably have no idea what the ACLU is, they really are bipartisan.

Y'know, if this were another organization thinking of making such a policy, the ACLU would be the ones suing them.

Wonder if they can sue themselves...

The mission of the ACLU is to preserve all of these protections and guarantees:

Your First Amendment rights-freedom of speech, association and assembly. Freedom of the press, and freedom of religion supported by the strict separation of church and state.

Your right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.

Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.

Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.

Nothing about it on their website. I wonder if, while not having the necessary lettuce to bankroll a suit, someone didn't decide to blab to the press instead.

Quote:
In a telephone interview, Mr. Kennison said his biggest concern was the relationship between the board and the A.C.L.U. staff.

"I think of the board as the brain and the staff as the fang and the claws," he said, "and the brain should govern the fangs and claws rather than the other way around."

Well, in fairness they're asking people to watch what they say, not saying they'll be terminated if they criticize the organization.

Still pretty funny, though.

I tried to find information regarding freedom of speech and criticizing your employer, but it's hard to google for.

The closest I found was this, although it applies to Canada only:

http://library.usask.ca/theses/available/etd-10212004-000024/ wrote:
In the employment context, school boards may restrict: dishonest speech which undermines trust, uncooperative speech which interferes with effectiveness and efficiency or which is abusive, disloyal speech which unjustifiably harms school boards' legitimate business interests, and disobedient speech which defies employers' authority. In other circumstances, however, employment law recognizes and protects teacher expression in spite of teachers' employment duties. Thus, employers are not allowed to interdict: speech solely because it is idiosyncratic or unconventional, appropriate banter with students, teachers who criticize their employers for illegal and negligent behaviour, and direct and forthright speech in the collective bargaining context. Under employment law, it is still unclear whether teachers can speak out responsibly on matters of public interest without violating their duty of loyalty or whether teachers can exercise some degree of academic freedom without undermining their duty of obedience.

As is probably to be expected, I'm not seeing the slippery slope on which I am allegedly standing. Can you clarify, or quote another rapper who can?

Not what I meant. That particular part of your post made me recall the Ice-T song. Of course I only recalled the hook (Freedom of Speech, Just watch what you say), so I went off in search of the entire lyrics. When I read through them, however, I couldn't help but look at them askance as a slippery slope argument, á la MonxDotty. Made me giggle, is all.

Side point, but I have to confess I mostly don't listen to the lyrics in rap and hip-hop music. I should probably see more of them written out like that.

The ACLU is an essential organizationin thsi time and place. While I do not agree with every action taken by the ACLU (not even close), I do agree with necessity of taking actions to vigorously defend the rights of the individuals in this country.

I'm actually a card carrying member. That has nothing to do with how I vote or where I stand on many issues. I belong because I believe the ACLU needs to exist and it needs to be active for our society to flourish. They probably only like me because I keep sending money.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he'll no longer give news conferences for the national media, after a dispute led a number of journalists to walk away from an event when he refused to take their questions.

Did I mention I hate this guy.

There is also the part where he wont allow anyone in cabinet to the media unless approved by the parties media guy.

Given that the ***** were a left wing organization, I'm not seeing a contradiction here. I'm assuming you were trying to be sarcastic and just failing miserably. But with you, who knows?

I'm sure there's probably at least one other person in the world stupid enough to believe that, but I'm guessing they probably didn't read this post.

Thanks for reminding me how utterly oblivious you are, it'll save me a lot of time replying that should have been spent chucking.

Ah. Gotta love revisonist history.

Let's see. The National Socialist Workers Party. Rose to power largely by appealing to the working class and poor. 10 out of 25 official bullet points of Hitler's German National Socialist Agenda are specifically pro-labor in fact. But there's nothing left wing here...

You are proceeding on the assuption that left wing is automatically non-authoritarian, so any authoritarian regime can't be left wing. I submit that your assumption is wrong. Communist Russia was clearly both left wing and authoritarian. Communist China was and is also clearly both left wing and authoritarian. I would actually argue that pretty much all left wing political movements from the 20th century on are inherently authoritarian. Or at least the ones that succeed are, based largely on the fact that left wing movements require using the power of the nation to enforce their agenda and that always requires a strongly authoritarian regime to pull off. Not that this fact is usually given openly to the masses who support the movement though.

Your argument is based, not on fact, but on what you want to believe. You are a Liberal. In fact, you're a professed Social Liberalist. This places you firmly in the left wing politically. You don't want to admit that you share that wing with people like Hitler, Stalin, and Mao Zedong, so you argue that they aren't really left wing after all. And that's revionism to the extreme...
