Ronaldo's playing? Didn't notice him.

Great goal, but Croatia may find depth in the 2nd.

Despite Flea'lo's earlier post, the fat lady has yet to sing.

Yikes!
Didn't realize he'd beefed up like that. I'd heard that he wasn't dominating the field like they expected him to... Maybe his endurance is down?

Escrive-se “Ronaldinho” no português. O ‘ñ’ castelhão é “nh” em Brasil.

I'm noticing that this thread isn't getting alot of lovin' from anybody else outside of Limeys and Sendero Luminoso recruits. While I don't have any particular afinity or animosity towards the sport, I do keep up with what is going on during the tournament. However, there's one thing that has always puzzled me and to which Dave Eggers wrote far more effectively: Flopping.

He writes, "But flopping in soccer is a problem. Flopping is essentially a combination of acting, lying, begging, and cheating, and these four behaviors make for an unappealing mix. The sheer theatricality of flopping is distasteful, as is the slow-motion way the chicanery unfolds. First there will be some incidental contact, and then there will be a long moment—enough to allow you to go and wash the car and return—after the contact and before the flopper decides to flop. When you've returned from washing the car and around the time you're making yourself a mini-bagel grilled cheese, the flopper will be leaping forward, his mouth Munch-wide and oval, bracing himself for contact with the earth beneath him. But this is just the beginning. Go and do the grocery shopping and perhaps open a new money-market account at the bank, and when you return, our flopper will still be on the ground, holding his shin, his head thrown back in mock-agony. It's disgusting, all of it, particularly because, just as all of this fakery takes a good deal of time and melodrama to put over, the next step is so fast that special cameras are needed to capture it. Once the referees have decided either to issue a penalty or not to our Fakey McChumpland, he will jump up, suddenly and spectacularly uninjured—excelsior!—and will kick the ball over to his teammate and move on."

Exactly.

Just why, precisely, has this otherwise decent sport allowed such behavior? Until flopping, and to maybe a greater extent low scores or ties are corrected, errr, modified it will continue to be largely ignored (much like this thread) by 'Mericans. And we all know that US domination is the desirable culmination of anything and everything.

You crayzee Yanks, at least get the lingo right if you want to talk "Soccer".

??? What are you trying to say? Everytime he touched the ball, he was crap and gave it away?

Diving, Mr Eggers, it is known as diving. And yes, it is a problem - especially if the players are from Italy or called Arjen Robben.

What you 'Mericans do not (and probably will never) understand is that the low scores are a crucial ingredient to the sport's appeal. 3 reasons:

1) The reason scores are low, is because it is very difficult to score. Soccer goals therefore tend to be better exhibits of sporting excellence than the average basket in basketball, for example.

2) You are more likely to get a small team beating a big team in Soccer than in high scoring sports. The higher scoring the sport, the more predictable the sport in terms of who will win. How often does the favourite lose at Basketball? This makes soccer more globally inclusive, because Togo on their day might beat France. Unpredicability adds to the tension when watching matches.

3) Soccer celebrations when a goal gets scored are more intense by a factor of 100s than American scoring celebrations. Having experienced both soccer crowds, and American sports crowds, I can assure you that being in a soccer crowd watching a match is a much more tense, passionate and ultimately exciting experience.

If you really like big scores, I have a sport to introduce you to. How do you fancy some cricket?

Ignore Soccer if you want, my dear little septics. The ignorant among you are only missing the biggest sporting event and party on the planet!

Lol i do find these americans funny. The only nation in the world that i can think of where football isnt huge. And why? Well firstly, its because the football world cup contains more than just american teams. How can a sport be good if americans are not garunteed victory? Simple.. it cant! It is much better to steal a womans sport such as rounders or netball, rename it baseball or basketball (or anything that begins with a B.. such a masculine letter noone will guess its a girls sport) and create a world series for it featuring american teams only. I love american logic :D

Any other conversations you want to interrupt without understanding the context?

hm what do you have on offer? Which context did i not understand? I saw what i presume to be an american (who else could have such a feeble knowledge of football) insulting our great game and the irony of that made me chuckle, so i posted my musings. Didnt realise that was against the rules.

Im sorry is this an invite only forum? is it required to have 4000+ useless posts before i can come here and talk ******** with/at you? Perhaps if i swear a bit? Can i be in your cool forum club then :lol

The first round of games is over, and i gotta say I was well-impressed by Argentina. And Tevez and Messi still havent touched the ball. I'm bitterly disappointed by France, who sucked donkey balls. England were ok considering Rooney was out. And I thought Holland was pretty good too.

Brazil were not as outstanding as i thought they would be. Maybe they need to fine tune their game, maybe they are being a bit overrated. Their defense kinda sucks.

So, I'm going for Argentina to win it this time round. And for England to lose in the final against them.

Cant wait to see the headline in The Sun.

Uhm, there is a whole round of matches today, until Germany kicks off round two later tonight.

Croatia was surprisingly vivid and cheeky. Kudos to them. Ronaldo should be flushed down the toilet, if his head wouldn't get stuck in the sewer pipe.

France was even worse. I was glad to see Zidane providing some sparkles here and there, but there was no magic from Les Bleus at all. Henry looked desolate. I still don't understand why he plays so incredibly lame, being the Gunners top dog. Perhaps he can only shine when the teammates treat him like the Don?

Oh, and how dumb can you be for keeping Trezeguet on the bench? Stick a baguette in Domenech's **** and get on with it!

Looking forward to Spain vs Ukraine. Two outsiders there.

#93 Jun 14 2006 at 6:48 AM Rating: Decent
The problem with Henry is that he needs a lot of the ball, and France havent understood that. For ******** he gets the ball at almost evey attacking play, while for France, he just seems isolated. Until he sees more of tha ball, he won't reach his ******* level.

Zizou was ok, but he seemed knackered in the second half. And yes, having Trezeguet on the bench is a disgrace, especially whe Dhorasso was brought on when it was still 0-0!!

But, our coach is crazy. He believes in astrology and wont play two scoprios in the same team because they will "attack each other". So, what can you expect...

And yeah, Spain might just be good, but they just dont care about international football. All the talk in Spain this week has been about the presidential election at Real Madrid. The World Cup is an afterthought ...

No room for Fabregas. wtf
No room for Raul. Smaller wtf.

I do have Ramos and Gusev in my Fantasy 11, so a 0-0 draw would be ideal ;P
#95 Jun 14 2006 at 8:09 AM Rating: Decent
Well, Raul has been pretty **** for the best part of two years now.

Fabregas, on tehopther hand, is awesome and I agree he should start. But then again, Xavi ain't so pushover.

So far Spain are playing like a breeze )

Gusev substituted, so no possible penalty points for a yellow card, and Ramos is scoring with keeping the nil and playing)

Should have scored, too, in which case I'd be very delighted indeed.

p.s. Pat, it is me or is Sheva on the bench or something?!
