I agree about Czech republic - style, power, determination. . .

Disagree about USA. Shapeless, inconsistent; never really looked like team dynamics were in place. Very disappointed.

Now I have hopes of Italy's game. . .

Best Goalkeeper 2005
WINNER Petr Cech
Chelsea FC's giant custodian Petr Cech was in irresistible form during their UEFA Champions League campaign. Despite being just 23-years-old, Chelsea's €10.3m man kept four clean sheets in the six group games he played, making one unforgettable save in the round of 16 clash with FC Barcelona to help his side into the last eight. His domestic form was also impressive where he broke the record for the number of clean sheets and for the amount of time he went

The People's Daily wrote:
Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech has won the world's best goalkeeper of 2005 poll which conducted by the International Federation of Football Historians and Statisticians (IFFHS), the results of which were released Wednesday.

Cech, who now plays for London's Chelsea, beat Brazilian Dida from AC Milan with a lead of 84 points and last year's winner Gianluigi Buffon, an Italian who plays for Juventus.

Cech, 23, is the first Czech goalkeeper in the history of the poll launched in 1987.

The year 2005 was a successful one for Cech who advanced to the World Cup with the Czech national team and won the Premier League Cup with Chelsea.

He holds the Premier League's shut-out record and in the current Premier League season he has let in no goal in 12 matches.

Cech placed as the best goalkeeper 14th overall in the Golden Ball prestigious poll of France Football magazine, the results of which were released November 2005.

Fans voted him recently as a goalkepeer of the UEFA Team of the Year 2005.

Arguably the best goalkeeper in the world. The Czech's undisputed No. 1 almost from the moment he made his debut as a 19-year-old in February 2002. Fantastic athleticism and incredible consistency. Broke the Premiership record for the number of minutes without conceding a goal in his first season at Chelsea, where he also became the first Blues keeper to lift the English league championship for 50 years

The Czech international football goalkeeper Petr Cech has just been named the best goalkeeper in the world by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics. Cech, who plays for English mega-club Chelsea, has won that accolade at just 23 years of age.

The International Federation of Football History and Statistics may have an obscure sounding name, but its annual vote to decide the world's best goalkeeper is regarded as authoritative.

That's ok Pat, I'll admit I'm somewhat blinded by a surplus of patriotism ;-)

I do like the "Arguably the best goalkeeper in the world" part, as VDS is indeed a lot older than Cech (who is incredibly talented, I am not denying that; he actually is my global number 2).

At this moment in time I honestly believe his age gives him the nod over Van der Sar.

Clean sheets are all that matters for a goalkeeper, I know all about it - heh, but I'm very sure VDS wouldn't do a lot worse than Cech in the current Chelski team. Hi Terry. Hi Gallas, und so weiter, und so weiter.

Anyway, come on Italy. Few more goals, please.
Luca Toni is giving the Ghanese defenders more than a handful of work.

Anyone else here sick enough to hope Ghana, having crippled a striker and avoided a red card, equalize while the eye-ties are down to 10 men? Smiley: sly

Because they're greasy, smelly, sexist cowards, they all make sweeping generalisations, and they are racists.

Mmmm. Horse-head - oregano, basil, a few pimentos - niiiiice

I have a question

Is it an acceptable practice in Soccer to have man on man dry humping as a means of celebration when scoring the second goal or is that just an Italian thing.

That was messed up.

Hey Goal,

Just gone through my match by match prediction. If Argentina win your group (which I think is likely), I predict England will play a quarter final against the winner of Holland/Portugal. We will be waiting for you!

The winner of that quarter final plays Brazil in semis, gulp.

Predicted QF:

Germany v Argentina (or Holland)
Italy/Czech v France
England v Holland (or Agentina)/Portugal
Brazil v Spain

In this form, I doubt Italy can beat them.

In that form I think Bristol Rovers beats them 5 nil.

Here's my take on the US match after finally viewing it last night.

The Ugly:

Damarcus Beasly. Where the hell was that guy? Not only was he virtually invisible but every time he touched the ball he had no form or turned it over.

The Bad:

Bruce Arena. When will he learn that Landon Donovan is a midfielder. Plain and simple that guy creates chances for other people more than for himself. Arena's starting 11 was abysmal as well. Our success in the last WC came from starting Reyna, O'brien, Donovan, and Beasly in the midfield. This WC? O'Brien on the bench, Beasly on the right side, and Donovan as a striker. After half Arena subbed in O'brien and went back to what worked and the US looked better.

The Good:

Eddie Johnson. This kid is a stud. If he didn't win a starting spot yesterday then we are really lost.

I really haven't seen the US play that badly since France. Very few players even looked interested, that was utterly disappointing. I don't think all is lost however. I think we'll put in a strong showing against Italy, hell I think the game would have been different if Reyna would have rattled the ball he put off the post in.

Hoping for a win against Italy [:gring:]

That Sun-Times site is a lifesaver. If not for that, I'd be in the ObGyn Waiting Room with all the other fans, trying to look like we're just walking by and stopped to tie our shoes.
