While the fall down drama was prevalent on both sides, I thought the two goalies were class acts when they met each other before the final shoot outs.

Zidane played well and honorably until that cheap shot that got him booted from the game. I'm sure that's not the way he would have liked to end his career.

Good match all the way though. I'm gonna have to start following soccer now - it was fun. Thanks to you all for the great discussion - it definitely got me hooked on watching future matches.

doh...there I was, even hoping a bit that France would win, as Zidane deserved it (heck, I even started to like that bugger). but then this "classy" action by Zidane...

well deserved red card, and in the end I was glad, that France didn't make it. things like that you may well do in some low brow suburb, but not when the world is watching...

well, and I am happy that we made third, that Klose won the golden ball, and Poldi the golden shoe. fun party all around :)

man what a way for zidane to end his career, what the hell was he thinking? so glad the french lost, cant stand them. italy shouldve won in regular time. pk was bs and there shouldnt of been an offside call on the 2nd goal.

i guess the french coach must be thinking that the championship wasnt "in the cards" sorry ;)

At least France played, as opposed to Italy taking dive after dive after dive after dive (Goes on 25 more times) in attempts of pulling kicks/cards.

And Materazzi got what he deserved. He's the dirtiest piece of **** to ever play soccer. Aside from holding and hanging on to Zidane the entire round, grabbing his arm before the ZidaneRam was extremely cheap.

QQ more fucking wop lovers.

right.... try wiping the foam from your mouth before typing, maybe you'll make more sense. both teams took dives, this is soccer we're talking about. just look at the pk.

btw, how about the rooney suspension? where are the apologists now?

Are you kidding? Laying someone out flat like that is a GREAT end to a brilliant career. Especially with 60 billion people watching. That's fucking badass if you ask me.

hmmm, someone should tell that boy to be nicer.

On the other hand, I think I like soccer better now...I'm a bad person. I think ice hockey is still betterer though.

The Itals in my neighborhood were blowing car horns and running around with flags draped off them and their cars all night long. At one major street corner with 2 pizzarias and 2 barber shops, (which in Italy would be known as downtown) they all gathered and made a nuisance of themselves till the cops chased them off. I walked through the celebration hoping against hope that some girls might flash their boobs in joyous celebration, knowing deep down that Italian women rarely, if ever, flash their hairy boobs.

In one particuarly surreal scene a black and hispanic cop were telling a teenage Ital, complete with the Growing up Gotti haircut and attire, that if he (the Ital) mouthed off again to them again, he would be handcuffed in the back seat of their squad car. He shut up and walked away. I remember smiling and thinking that is not a sight you would have seen in NYC 40 years ago. =)

I agree, it was a great hit. From what I read, the Italian player got what he deserved, too. Someone linked this on the PvP comics forum:

I just wanted to see footage of the actual hit. Meh. It was a lovetap! Certainly not sportsmanlike, but not the facer I'd expected. He acted without thinking, and he got what was coming to him. A shame, but not unjust.

Hehehe.

And at least it was entertaining. I'm so gutted we lost, we really didn't deserve it. But Italy had a master plan, and it worked. They defended well, played for penalties from the 45th minute, and did that succesfully. We couldn't breach their defense, and that's what happens.

Still, thats why I love football. A few inches to the left, Zidane's header was a goal, and he was a hero. Instead, Buffon saved, and Zidane's other header will be just as famous., though for other reasons

I couldn't care less what al those self-righteous moralistic commentators are saying. Zidane took us to the final, and noone of this would've happened without him. We had a ****** coach, some very average players, and some goldie oldies. What they did was simply extraordinary. And he puled the strings. And Materazzi is a ****, just a shame he headbutted him in the chest and not in the nose. If you're gonna get sent-off like that, at least hurt the guy.

The french team has nothing to be ashamed of. As for Zidane, well, one final thing: The reason everyone loves him so much, is because fame and glory didn't change him. He stayed the same: humble, hard-working, true to his roots and himself. And with a short-fuse. We knew he had it. It's a shame it came out at the final, but that's life.

So, all I can say is:

Merci les bleus.

Et surtout, merci Zidane.
