Or would you say they were really banging on the French doors?
In the first half, I thought it was pretty even. They never really threatened us, and we didn't penetrate their defense meanigfully.
In the second half, they had loads of posession, and were slightly more threatening. However, I fully agree with your assessment of Scolari. He took off Pauleta, their only real striker, to put Simao, a winger, thereby putting Ronaldo in the centre, where he is a lot less dangerous. Just as he did against England, except this time it was 11v11.
I also agree that Portugal were very strongn defensively, but lacked some bite in attack. Pauleta is decent, but he is not a world-class striker, a fact proven by the fact he plays for a small team in a small league ;-)
It will much harder against Italy. We have the psychological edge, but the Italians are on a mission to redeem themselves and their football.
If we win, it will be an extraordinary story for Zidane and french football, after the debacle of 2002-04.
If the Italians win, it will also be an extraordinary story for them.
All in all, this final will be tense, on a kife-edge, and hard to predict. Low-scoring, for sure. Strong defenses on both side, and a reluctance to commit too many men. I'm hoping Henry will have "his" moment of genius, or that Zidane will perform one final magic trick.
Either way, it's a million times better than what was expected of us. The same goes for the Italians.
I can't wait...
