not entertaining in any fashion (except for being followed out by the Rent-a-Cop)...spooky, maybe, creepy and desperate, yes. I saw another guy, an old white dude on the subway, wander up the car mumbling "anyone got change...help me get a coffee..." without actually looking at anyone, then sat down and talked at some young woman.
New York panhandlers (that I've met) can be decent folk though. I encountered one black fellow with a group of friends outside Grand Central...he came over and started chatting, very friendly-like, asked if we liked r&b and started to sing a bit (rather well actually) then asked for a dollar, or some change. Due to the amiable, non-creepy manner in which he approached I gave him 50 cents and a cigarette.
