But yeah a bunch of friends of mine are planning to go up to Canada in a few weeks, and theres a disagreement on whether or not a passport is required.

Some people are saying: You only need proof of citizenship and a photo id. Friend of mine went 2 monthes ago and just needed birth certificate and driver licence.

Others are saying they JUST passed a law requiring it.

Current Requirements for Entry Into Canada

Visas are not required for U.S. citizens entering Canada from the U.S. You will, however, need:

1. Proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport (For information on obtaining a U.S. passport, check with one of the regional passport agencies located throughout the U.S.) or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate. A driver’s license, voter’s registration card or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship.
2. Photo identification, such as a current, valid driver’s license.

All U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid passport.

It looks like the passport laws are due to go into effect in 2008.

I'd still recommend getting a passport. Some of my friends without passports have said that you are just asking to be extremely hassled when you try to get back into the states by immigration. I've never had a huge problem travelling on passport.

What part were they coming from Smiley: laugh A few friends and I went up to Niagara Falls last month to hit Casino Niagara. We got across with no problems and we came back with no problems.

Hell, in Montana you just need 2 feet. There is so much unprotected border up there it's rediculous. There's been a lot of talk about the fact that drug dealers are now taking their drugs up to Canada by boat, then bringing it across the Canadian/US border since it's a lot less controlled and easier to do than trying to get it in across the Mexican border or through the Gulf area.

I just got a passport for the first time because I'm traveling to Europe this summer. It cost nearly $100 and takes up to 6 weeks to get. So if you can still get through the Canadian border with a birth certificate and a driver's license, I'd do it.

They were coming back from Ottawa, but it was by plane, so maybe that made the difference?

Not needed here as much as over there. We had to jump through hoops to get ours for the trip to London. Quite the pain, and unless you live near a border you probably don't leave the country much.

Right now I have no problem crossing back and forth across the border with just a valid picture ID. But in 2008 passport will be required.

Same for me. I've been to Canadia numerous times and have never been asked for more than a driver's license and sometimes not even that much. It's one of those requirements that you should have in case they ask. Kinda like you are supposed to carry around a Passport when anywhere in EU, but most times authorities won't bother asking you for it unless they have a reason to.

I've never needed a passport to get to Canada. Just a photo ID. It's funny, getting into Canada isn't the problem. It's getting back into the states. Everytime I try to return we get some overstuffed border guard trying to trick us into saying that we're not actualy from the states, even with wads of ID.

My experience is the other way around. The US border is a piece of cake to get through, while the Canadian border asks more questions. That is probably the borders I go through and the fact I havent had a tan in about 10 years.

Just go through the Niagra Falls border and say that you want to sight-see, or hit the casino, or something. They'll let you through no problem.

No, really. I was going to see the Barenaked Ladies in Toronto and tried to get through the border south of there. Ended up waiting for two hours (it's a long story) before I got turned back, at which point I went through the Niagra Falls border, where the guy didn't even ask for anything beypmd the drivers license of the current driver. Smiley: lol

EDIT: Punctuation, is greater, than me..

Hehe. Nobby. Imagine that all of Europe was one country. With no national boundaries or borders and no need for a passport to travel between them. How many people living in Europe would have one?

Heck. As several people have stated, you don't even need one to travel to the only two nations we border. You can go anywhere you want in Canada and return. All without a passport. You can travel anywhere you want in Mexico and return. All without a passport. So even those of us living on the borders don't tend to get them either. Even folks from other countries don't need a passport to cross those borders. They just need the correct IDs. Back in my teen years, one of the guys in the group was an Iranian citizen. He went on the obligatory TJ party nights with us just the same. The worst he ever got coming back was a comment that he needed to update the picture on his green card (he was like 8 in that picture). In fact, if he'd lied and said "US citizen" when asked his nationality, it's unlikely anyone would have looked twice. Most of the time, they didn't bother to even look at any photo ID at all. If you spoke good English and looked like the rest of the drunk kids staggering back across the border, no one cared...

Oh and you Americans, dont you fret, soon our unarmed border guards will be armed!

Yes Canadians with guns! But dont worry, with a cup in one hand and a donut in the other they likely wont be able to draw quickly.

(that and the program to train them and arm them will be completed in 5-6 years)

So go ahead! Come on in! We have guns too now!

(were cool right? right? Bush told Harper we would be cool if we did it...)

It didn't seem like it took that long to get my passport... maybe four weeks.

I printed out the forms online, got pictures taken at Eckerds or someplace, paid the clerk of court when I dropped off the photos and forms (with a copy of birth certificate and proof of SSN#), and then waited a few weeks. I don't think it was more than 160$ for my wife and I, though I could be wrong. I think we also paid for express service. I think the overall cost depends a good bit on what the clerk of court or other official is going to charge you.

It really wasnt' a hassle, as long as you have a copy of your birth certificate. Now THAT is a pain in the *** to get here in SC.

I got in and out of Mexico with much less problems, and faster at the checkin/out lines too. The family in front of us took like 30 minutes at the checkin station because all four had birth certificates. My wife and I took less than five minutes total.

Just get the passport. Even if it's not ready in time, at least you'll have it for your next trip, whether it be to Canada, or another country that might require it.

Why do you want to go to Canada anyways? Do you know that's where things like Celine Dion come from?
