I work for a non-profit organization who hasn't had a budget increase approved in five years. As health insurance costs keep going up, as well as required increases in salaries, they had to cut costs somewhere. Guess where?

They're letting me go at the end of the month but paying me through August. While this might sound not terrible to some, the employment situation is horrendous at the moment and I'm going to take anything I can get immediately in order to give me as long as possible to find another full time job with benefits. No more school for now, and I may have to have the husband drop out as well in order to work full time. We're already living paycheck to paycheck, so this is fairly scary. Mostly I'm worrying about September first, when we no longer have health insurance. I grew up that way and it was very scary sometimes and I don't want that for my baby.

Anyway, I start revamping my resume tomorrow, and I'm meeting with HR to find out what options I have there (since I'm technically employed by the university, I may have some rights as far as priorties in employment, but I'm not sure). All in all, life just got a whole lot more frightening.

Well now, that's sh[Aquamarine][/Aquamarine]itty. What's the husband do for work? If the job situtation is that bleak, could you potentially relocate altogether?

Is there a chance you'll be dancing for quarters in Boston?

hang tight Nexa. Sometimes, something like this could actually open up some doors for you you wouldnt have otherwise noticed. Being laid off is one of the scariest things to go through when you have a family to take care of. But Im sending good thoughts towards you

Thanks guys, and thanks for the offer Neph, maybe I'll send it to you once I'm done playing with it. Another eyeball is always nice.

Anything is possible, haha. As far as relocation goes, that would be pretty tough since we just bought a house here. The husband is working full time this summer in a student position on campus, so that's helpful. If I can get another position on campus, that's where he'll be working in the fall as well while he continues going to school. It's 40 hours a week at the moment, but only just above minimum wage with no benefits. As it's a student position though, he doesn't pay FICA, which is a help, and it doesn't count as our income for our daycare subsidy, so that knocks our daycare expense down a fair bit. Every little bit helps! Boy is that more information than you needed, can you tell I'm thinking out loud?

Yikes.

Main benefit to being in the military is you have to be either extremly bad at your job or make a collosal f*ck up for them to sack you.

Hang in Nexa it'll come good.

Aw, Nexa, that sucks.

However, it may be the fulfillment of my personal dream, which is to read the children's books you should be writing.

But no pressure! Any time is fine, really. Looking forward to "The Further Adventures of Hannah and Her Toes" whenever you get ready to put it on paper.

Aw, Nexa, I'm so sorry that happened. Happy thoughts out to you guys. I hope you find a job soon. Will you qualify for unemployment benefits, if you had to file for that? Also, check into what health insurance programs may be available through Maine. And you may want to let your bank know about your employment situation. Depending on your bank, payments may be deferred for a period due to a job crisis.

I'm sorry to hear that. Being laid off sucks as a rule, and I can't imagine what it's like with a family. Don't worry, I'll buy you drinks in Boston so you don't have to spend much, and I'll chip in wherever else I can, like van rental and such.

Have you looked into cobra? Or is that too expensive? I hate that you're stressed about this, but you are a fantastically smart woman, and I'm sure some job out there is waiting to snap you up.

Good luck, honey. I have faith in you.

Wow, sorry to hear that Nexa.

Being chronically unemployed myself, I know all too well how hard it can get, even though I don't have a family to support (just an alcoholic).

Wow, that bites. I thought my day sucked, but you win.

Word to the wise: if you don't keep your resume up to date and posted, start doing so now. Even if you're content and happy in your present employment, having your resume available to employers gives you a broader opportunity to know what's out there. It's not a sin against your current employer; and you are not required to entertain offers that may come your way, but it's nice to know your market value and volatility as an employee. and if something like this does happen, it's very comforting to know what employers are already interested in acquiring someone with your skills and talents.

Given that you will be paid through August, you have a good window to find a worthwhile replacement for your current job which beats the hell out of "Would you like fries with that?"

Have I looked into a what what? Are the cobras on a plane?

It's not as though I'll lose the house or anything, I have oodles of ways to go fantastically in debt! I can borrow absurd amounts of stafford loan if it comes right down to it, but of course, I'd rather not.

Thanks for the nice thoughts though all, I appreciate it! I'm sure I'll find something, and maybe it'll even pay more, who knows! *starts humming "the Sun will come out Tomorrow"*

bleh!

Nexa

Edit: oh, and that job requires a Master's, which I don't have, which has been my problem as of late. I can't believe what they pay people with a B.A. around here, and even with an MS it can be pretty lousy...not that I have one...yet... :)

It *is* a really pretty craphole, with no crime, and decent schools. The cost of living is also really low, which almost makes up for the ****** wages.

COBRA can work if you line up another job on the quick; it's saved many an inadvertant freelance contractor from having to go uninsured. The guys I know will carry COBRA until they land a full time position somewhere, cancel it while they're with that employer, and re-establish COBRA as a stopgap if they go off on their own again.

Only downside is it can be pricey; make sure you compare/contrast the cost of insurance via COBRA with some websites that let you self-insure. You might be able to find a more acceptible deal elsewhere; mileage definitely varies.

Some universitys do the lifetime employment placing thing, at least from commericals i've seen for a bryant and stratton college in New york, i dunno if that would be optional, it's just all i really know.

Sucks to hear and yeah, living without health insurance is pretty shaky.

COBRA insurance? No thanks, I’ll stick to my GI Joe HMO.

Sorry to hear it, Nexa - things will work out. They always do. It's the sucky crap that you have to deal with to get to that point is always a pain.

Good luck, I'm rooting for ya! Smiley: smile
