Call me whatever you want, but thank frickin' GOD I don't have to update FFXI all by myself anymore. Time to go get a massage and finish writing up that "You better not f*ck up the image filing system I've worked on for two years" guide to updating Allakhazam.

Is this really such a shocking development though? I mean it's not as though there haven't been goofy supporters of Allakhazam by way of funky banner ads that would cause problems for people, having IGE supporting Allakhazam doesn't seem so different.

Haha, but not pressure!

About sixteen months ago the small company I worked for was acquired by a much, much larger corporation. Not a hostile takeover, just a really good offer that caught my bosses by surprise.

The FIRST thing we were told was that not much would change. "We're not here to change your company culture - it's what made you a company worth acquiring!"

I can barely recognize the place now. It isn't the same, at all. It's better in some ways - we've hired a ton of people, and there's money backing us up now; but as far as the culture? There kinda isn't one, now. It's hard to explain, but we've gone from a small outfit that used to spend our lives in each others' offices collaborating madly for good or ill, knowing the stakes were high and everyone's input was vital... to a cubicle farm.

My point is, things ARE going to change. Alla won't be calling all the shots anymore, and may eventually decide to hand over the reins entirely and step out. That may not be the plan now, but it's going to happen.

I'm not leaving until I see how things play out. But, yeah. Premium is going off of auto-renew for a bit. Mr Winky may not have the heart to wink any longer. We'll see.

Im copying what I wrote down in the "Official" thread in forum feedback on my final stance of the matter. Its long but it covers everything I think needed to be covered for my own point of view.

Quote:
I went to bed last night and thought long and hard about this. I slept on it and finished catching up on what was written after I logged last night. My thoughts for now:

Allah, from a business point, it didnt look like there was much choice if you wanted to make this the best gaming site. You and your employees have worked really hard to make this site what it is. We, the community members, see this, and applauded what you have done over the years. Many of us bought premium, not to just have use of the extra services, but as a way of showing our support. $3 a month is not much, we know. $3 a month isnt enough to do what you guys dream of doing. This businiess deal will allow you to now achieve those dreams that before, were just dreams. As a business owner, you did what you thought was best for the site and the community in the long run. You dont have the option to stay on your high moral horse when you are trying to run something as huge as Allas. SO I understand and applaud your business decisions, in the business sense.

On the other hand, we community members, dont have to get off our high moral stance. While you may need to grudgingly give way to something you find less than moral, we don't have to. IGE and other companies have ruined in game economies, making the gaming experience we love and adore less than stellar. It has created major difficulties for new players who wish to join the growing community of MMO lovers to have a chance at getting to the top without resorting to cheating. I've watched it happen on many of the MMOs Ive come to love. These companies are responsible for many of the gaming bots, out there camping for gold, KSing when a regular player dares to wander in the area looking to play after paying their monthly fee. These companies are responsible for the skyrocketing economy in most MMOs. There is a lot of resentment, anger, and frustration directed at these companies from the gamers who love the game for the game itself.

It's been stated many times that Allahs will have no affiliation with IGE. Sadly, while the connection may be very distant, the link is still there. From a business point, you did your best to keep it as far from your name as possible. But even some ties to it is dissapointing to the community who has stood behind you for many reasons, one of them your strong stance against gold/gil selling. It's already been stated that the parent company will allow you to run the site as you like so long as you stay profitable. But you have also stated you were losing income before the merge went down. You're going to gain a whole bunch of new users here witth the merge, but you will also be losing a lot of premium sales from your faithful members. A lot of your faithful do not want to take the chance that even one penny of theirs sent to support you could possibly end up in the hands of those who support IGE. And while Im no business person, I have to wonder what will change here to make this place profitable enough to keep the Parent company off your back?

I'm not leaving the community. My home away from home is the Asylum and those who post there are my friends. Allahs has been a great place to come and shoot the breeze when I have time. I really appreciate everything that has been done to make this site a great place. I never bought premium for the added options. I spent the $3 and would have spent more if you had asked, as a way of saying thank you so much for what you and your gang have done for the gaming community. But with all this new money coming in, I think I'll be turning off my autorenewal for awhile. It's not like my piddly $3 is anything compared to the money you guys now have, and until I get a more clear indication of what the money spent is supporting, even if from a distance, Id rather not take a chance.

Again, on a business level, I do heartily congratulate you. I think you did the only smart thing a company owner could have done. But please dont take it personal that we, the community, are not happy that it had to happen in the first place. While in the end it may be good for the site, we all feel as if we've been slapped in the face by the one person who we thought believed as strongly as we, that IGE and companies like it, help to destroy the MMOs we all love.

I know, speaking from a personal standpoint (not a business one, as I'm not really qualified, nor do I really feel like it), I want to see you folks stick around. The Asylum has brought more fun into my life than most other things, sadly enough, and seeing the people leave entirely would be really sad.

One of the reasons why I don't like change is what Danalog just finished saying.

Personally, I'm remaining neutral. I'm not going to yell "sell out", but I'm also not going to turn a blind eye either.

Sadly enough, I do like Oreos, and if I've stayed here as long as I have and made the friends that I've made, it means that for the most part, I also like Allakhazam.com.

Though, my avatard doesn't really make too much sense in this scenario, in a way it does. This all is kinda cheesy; not the tasty kind of cheese, either. I'd would love that this zam.com thread would've never existed, personally.

It does though, and I'm already dreading it. The affiliation that this site just gained just adds to the dreading.

I would've rathered paid more for premium if it would've kept things the same.

Pay more money to keep this place as a shining bastion against RMT? I'd have paid triple to see that happen.

A lot of people are staying. I think the number who have said 'I'm never coming back' are a small but visible minority.

What is happening is that a vast majority of the long time gaming community on the site who paid premium not for premium features but rather as a means to support Allakhazam.com are stating flat out that thanks to the move they no longer feel the need to pay premium.

So like Jophiel, Samira, Angsty, Twizzle etc and about 300-400 people from the gaming forum (probably much more) we will continue to use the site but we won't be giving them our money anymore. Also most of the gaming population is refusing to help add content to the site any longer which for a site like Allakhazam which relied on its community to add to MMO content for quests, items and other databases this is a big blow.

On a side note: Alla, what the **** are you thinking? Asking the people on your forum if they want it? All it could possibly acheive is a whole lot of "i'm withdrawing my subscription" and "we fear change", just do it, ask questions later. You of all people should know not to expect a decent answer to this sort of thing, not off internet ********.

He didn't ask, he informed, unless you read something I didn't.

There's why you can't trust GREED.

The mentality that congratulates itself for being the one that STABBED first, usually proudly boasting how it was delivered in the back and was unsuspected.

I cancelled premium auto-renewal because I'm a lazy idiot and I'll forget to do it later if I put it off.

By turning it off now I know that, come late September, I'll see my avatar disappear one day and have to take a moment to ask myself if I think the site is still worth it.

I'm doing the same because I'm a follower. Also, because that thread is too crowded Smiley: grin

=============================

Well, after sleeping on it, I pretty much echo DSD. I'll say it shorter though...

Alla, congratulations on the business aspect. I know you have a wife and child so better to them and better to your employees and their families as well. I've enjoyed the past six years here and your hands-on style and willingness to be a down to earth guy played a major role in that. Even at three bucks a month, I owe you for years of information and entertainment and generally putting up with us. Personally, I think you should take some of that corporate cash and put it towards a goodwill liason mission to Boston Smiley: wink2

Your stance on plat/gold/gil sales over the years has been consistant and earnest. Which, I imagine, is part of why it's so difficult to hear about this deal now after you lasted so long. But I'll give you credit where it's due that you did last this long when other forums and sites were cashing in on the easy money. I admit I'm disappointed to hear about this deal, but I'm not willing to demonize you for it.

I'll stick around for the time being because, let's face it, this place has been a home for the last half-decade and I'm not so easily displaced. I have four months left on my subscription so I'll have time to decide for myself if the climate is shifting. I firmly believe that you believe that it won't change but the reality of the situation will prove itself for better or ill.

Good luck to you and the rest of your staff.

Meh.

I've lost my anti-gold/plat/gil buying fervor. Whatever works at this point.

For Alla, good business move. Ehically it's your call, but tactically, good move.

You can't even afford premium. It's not as if you'd be buying gold.

I am protesting this site. Everyday will be henceforth "A Day without Neph's Money" until they decide that they should give everyone who has been here for years some compensation for their time.

I did the same. However, I did it more for personal reasons. As of about 2 weeks ago, I'm not currently playing any MMO's. One of the reasons I've paid for premium for the last several years was for the premium features offered for the various games I've played. Yes, it's nice not having ad banners when coming to post in the Asylum, but not sure it's worth it when not using the features relating to games. Now if I ever go back to an MMO and want the features for the game I'm playing, I may pick up premium again. The other reason I paid for premium was to basically support the site that I spent so much time going to, and was so helpful to my gaming. But yes, how I feel about the site once the time comes around again will certainly play a factor in that decision as well.
