They have had the whole prequel starfleet academy days movie idea on the backburner since the original cast was still doing movies (almost 20 years) and always thought better of it.
Now that Berman/Braga have run the series into the ground even among the most hardcore fanatical fanbase they feel the need to pull out an idea that has never been good enough as there last ditch attempt to make money.
It didnt work for Enterprise, it wont work on the Big Screen either.

Considering how open Ian McKellen is about being gay, it doesn't surprise me a bit that idiots spread these types of rumors about him, probably taken from out-of-context remarks he's made along the way.
