I've been wearing contacts for awhile now and have never had any trouble with them. Though, I do prefer to just wear my glasses most of the time with how thin they are now-a-days.
When I do where them the only time there's any discomfort is late at night (my eyes get tired very easily - in which case my vision with contacts ends up being about the same as in the morning without 'em), when I don't blink enough (coincidentily I can win in any staring contest...it's true - see contacts do have a use
), or when I sleep in them. Otherwise, I normally don't even notice they're in and sometimes go to push up my glasses and then remember I'm not wearing any, ^-^.

Besides they make these cool ones now... red eye, tiger eye, flowers, peace sign, zombies etc
Though, I don't have anything "cool" like that. (in truth I think I'd feel kind of uncomfortable with even black out lens =/ meh) but I do have a few sets of blue and a few of green contacts that I use every now and then. The blue seriously cover up my brown eyes and stand out a lot - it's hard for people not to notice but the green kind of blend and just give me lighter eyes...maybe amber or some such color like that. All in all they're pretty cool but the color and design ones are a bit more uncomfortable then just plain clear ones and this is coming from someone that's been wearing them for several years now. I suppose it's a pay off - a bit of discomfort for a cool design or color in your eye.
@op
Hope you can adjust to them cause they really can be great.
p.s. mine are "acuvue: advanced" the Acuvue line tends to work really well so you may want to look into those.
