I remember seeing somwhere on this board some months back that there were other, better alternatives to the IPOD out there. Anyone remember what they were? I'm looking for something compact enough to take to the gym with me here.
Thanks fellas.

I have an 20 gig ipod and an ipod shuffle. The ipod shuffle is great for going to the gym, running trail, etc.

I'm not sure what you expect to be "better" -- what is it that you don't like or wish to improve upon? I have no issues but maybe I'm just used to it now and overlooking some major flaw.

I admit, I haven't used that many different players, but before I got the ipod I used a memorex mp3 player with 128 meg of internal memory. It worked fine but I prefer the ipod controls and iTunes as my interface on the PC.

Look at the Zen Micro. I bought one a week ago and love it. Very easy to use and has a few nice extra features like a FM radio.

If you look around for user reviews there are comments about issues with a short in the headphonejack. That seems like it was just with the orginal relese and has been fixed.

I don't know if you jog but its not recommended to use for that. Only draw back I have found so far is there are not a lot of toy to buy for it like you can for a ipod.

highly recommend the zen micro also. has more features, cheaper, and no registraition necessary, meaning you can transfer what eveer is in your zen to anything else using windows softwear, including another zen.

ipod is trying to make whatever you put on their devise propriatary. meaning you cant transfer it to anywhere unless you use their softwear, you cant even transfer it to another ipod unless they are both regestered to you.

zen has no restrictions. my 6 gig zen has a built in fm tuner, voice recorder, will record from the fm tuner, will store data files, and can be interfaced with windows media center. the 8 gig zen will store photos and display them. the 20 gig will do dvds and other video files.

most major music file sharing services, like napster, msn music, raphsody, and others will recognize the zen also.

BTW, most places are usually sold out of the zen. but you can order them online at places like circuitcity.com
