Bryant Gumble made some comments regarding the Olympics on his sports show that runs on HBO on February 7th. Many of you may not have even heard about it. I didn’t until I saw a very brief discussion on some news program as I was flipping through channels last week. The discussion lasted about 3 minutes, and I’ve yet to see anything anywhere else about it till I started searching on the internet for it. I was even surprised that no one posted here about it, as usually we are like Vultures to the carnage whenever some obscure tidbit comes up. Here’s a quote from his broadcast:

Quote:
"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who don’t like them and won’t watch them ... Because they’re so trying, maybe over the next three weeks we should all try too. Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that something’s not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what’s called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they’re done, when we can move on to March Madness — for God’s sake, let the games begin."

Now, I’ll agree that for the most part, the winter Olympics are pretty boring. I do enjoy watching some of the skiing and snowboarding. The curling, figure skating, speed skating, and the rest is all pretty dull. However, even if I find some of it dull I won’t deny the fact that many of them are excellent athletes and do things I could only hope to try.

That said, if some white analyst had said something about the summer Olympics being a laugh because they look like an NAACP convention, we’d have never heard the end of it. It would have been broadcasted all over every news station, said analyst would be disgraced and either suspended from his job or, more likely, flat out fired.

Is the reason we heard so little about this because of the predominance of liberal media? Or is it simply because having this come from the whitest black man in America makes it hard to take offense? Or, is it simply that no one bothers to subscribe to, or watch HBO anymore?

No
Yes
When does the Sopranos start?

Pretty pathetic comment on his part. Just because some of the games do not favor American past times doesn't mean that the other 50+ countries involved don't take it serious. Mr. Gump is main stream sport oriented and doesn't find satisfaction in reviewing global events that do not incorporate a ball, hoop or mediocre performance/skill for huge contracts.

There would be riots. Lots of them.

HBO should stick to film and dump the failing sports shows that they still find need to broadcast.

Pfft, Bryant Gumbel makes Wayne Brady look like Dave Chappelle.

I think it's refreshing, actually, that they don't have 7-foot, 130lb bushmen named Mglawabwani Bnykwantu winning the biathlon.

Unless there are some barriers to entry that prevent blacks from engaging in winter sport activities, Gumble's comment is without point. It's nice to try and be edgy in an effort to gain some share of the ratings, but one really ought try a bit harder. Suggest that the Klan supports the Aryanization of the winter games, say - or fabricate some tale about blacks being denied the right to lace up their skates for the short program.

This misguided pot-shot does nothing to rouse me.

Oz was good... I still watch the reruns on On Demand.

Rome is a good series, too. But HBO ain't what it used to be.

Part of me feels that he really ought to be called on it, but the other part of me thinks that my problems with the comments stem more from the fact that people would jump down a white man's throat for a similar comment.

As in, I kind of take it as saying why call them the world's greatest atheletes, when they only represent such a small amount of the world's population. And though that comment is a bit of a logical fallacy, its not really that inflammatory. A silly comment, but nothing to get too upset over.

I had a much bigger problem with the crap that Larry Bird had to deal with when he suggested that young white american kids might take more interest in NBA basketball if there were more talented white americans in the NBA.

The fact that people called him a racist for that is really sad and ridiculous.

Damn, I didn't know that. Smiley: mad

I think HBO has some of the best quality programs on television, like Oz, Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Carnivale, Rome, and my current favorite -- Deadwood. Hell, you can even go back to The Larry Sanders Show for a great comedy series.

Well, that's kind of the point, isn't it? Your comment about Larry Bird was well made - whites are not allowed to say anything about physical or cultural differences between the races, but blacks can say pretty much anything they want, true or not. (Anyone who says figure skaters aren't real athletes has never tried it. It's like ballet; never mind how pretty it is to watch - those people are amazing athletes.)

Nothing is stopping blacks of any nationality from learning how to figure skate or ski, except of course for the lack of cold weather (hardly a problem for American blacks in the North and Northeast), any more than anything is stopping whites from playing basketball. It's just cultural.

I was describing a scuba trip to a black friend once, and told her, "You and your husband should really consider trying it, I can't do it justice in words." She replied, quite seriously, "Oh, no, black folks don't go underwater." I laughed and said, "That's not true, in the Caribbean I see black people diving all the time." I can't remember her reply but it was to the effect that they must be crazy.

Pretty much because no one can hold a candle to Canadian girls. On or off the ice.

Yeah, I missed hockey. I'll watch that sometimes too.

I've gotten sick of the Olympics though, too much hype and now that it happens every 2 years in stead of every 4 it's overkill.

That's what bothers me most, I guess. The double-standard.

I TiVo this show on one of the HBO's called CatHouse. It's a reality show which takes place at the world famous Bunny Ranch in Nevada. So basically it's like The Real World but all the reqular castmates are prostitutes and anyone who comes over to visit is getting laid. I saw this midget jump onto a man's face and ever since I've not only been astounded that a miniature woman could stand fully upright and still have her crotch planted firmly on my face while I lay prone, but I've been wondering where I could purchase an horny female midget. I know where I could rent one. Needless to say, this is must-see-tv around my household, and I'll be keeping all my HBOs.

As for Gumbel, aside from the obvious double-standard he demonstrates, which should trouble everyone (maybe not blacks, I take that back partially), I find him too much of a caricature to take very seriously. There may be some truth in what he says, though, if you look at the socio-economic aspects of where and how winter sports get played.

I mean, take the biathalon, where competitors ski around a course and stop periodically to fire a rifle at targets. How's a black youth expected to learn to fire at a stationary target?

You know, I disagree with this. I've been thinking about standards, and the uneven application thereof; and one conclusion that seems inescapable to me is this: exceptions to standards of ability and behavior are made for people who the standard setter sees as inferior.

In other words, it is a compliment to expect people to rise to the same standards you set for yourself, and an insult to imply that they would not be able to do so.

Blacks should be troubled by this free pass they're getting. It means, in part, that no one is taking them seriously.

Just to play the other side for a second but, for every person who complains that no one can take a joke these days and political correctness has run amuk, you get many of the same people saying "OMG he told a joke and if a white guy had told it..."

Decide which you want. Yeah, it's a double standard but ******** that Gumble must not be allowed to say such jokes doesn't do anything but shore up the walls of rampant PC-dom.

I'm not arguing that Gumbel shouldn't be allowed to say whatever he likes. I am saying that he should expect to face repercussions when he says ignorant, racist things; the fact that he is not, is actually evidence of a race-based double standard. We make allowances for him because he's black.

I don't think political rectitude is the answer. I think frank, open discussion might be; but I don't know. I've never seen it done in a public medium.

I wish we could reach a point where that kind of conversation were permitted, but at present there is still too much money to be made in promoting the divide. There are players on both sides of the fence who earn their living doing little besides maintaining the separation of the races. Solving the problem means taking them off the gravy train, a thing which they would likely resist tooth and nail, to the point of inciting race riots if need be.

We may have to wait for such people to die.

The move toward a winter version of the Olympics began in 1908. The Winter Olympics are held every 4 years just like the Summer Olympics. It's been every 2 years (alternating between the two) for long before you was born.

Unless my memory is completely shot, (a distinct possibility) I seem to remember them holding the winter and summer olympics in the same year. So it was 4 years in between Olympic sessions. It wasn't until around 90 that they started alternating summer and winter Olympics so that they came around every 2 years.

Or perhaps all those years of the relatives smoking grass has finally affected me second hand.
