Got a new job, and I'm moving about 750 miles away. Not only am I overwhelmed by all the things I need to do before April, but I'm overwhelmed by the expense. Is U-Haul really the cheapest way to go? I have some large things (bed, couch, screen) and some small things, and a car. Oy.

So overwhelmed. Any hints/tips?

I don't know if U-Haul is the cheapest, but I might be the easiest, there is a website that lets you look at all the local moving companies..

750 miles.. good gawd. Make sure the radio in the truck works before you rent it.

That reminds me of some guys I know who were doing some long distance driving. They were heading home and had listened to each other and all the music they had too much. Bored out of their gourd they picked up a hitch hiker along the way to chat with. Only about 1/2 a mile down the road they realized that the guy couldnt speak a word of english, and neither of them was a francophone.

I've moved 5 times since 2003 in 3 different cities. I think I broke it down to :

"If I hadnt used it since the last time I moved it gets thrown out"

The more junk you can get rid of before you move the better. When I moved in with my girlfriend we filled up 1 Uhaul van and 3 half tons full of stuff from her alone. That is after I made her toss out 5 garbage bags full of stuff. I got rid of at least another 5 garbage bags after we moved in together.

U-Haul and Ryder are 2 of the biggest truck rental places. You will pay more for a one-way move than if you will be returning the truck to where you rented it. A few tips:

1)Find out the type of fuel, gas v. diesel. Depending on your route, there may not be a lot of stations selling diesel.

2)Find out the MPG for the truck you will rent, with gas prices these days it may be cheaper to rent one-way travel then drive the truck back and refuel it.

3)Check when the last inspection was. Moving a friend from San Jose to Sacramento, we had the air brakes on the truck he rented overheat just before we went up a steep hill. We then spent an hour and a half waiting for the rental company to get someone out to check the brakes.

4)Refuel before you drop it off. If you think gas prices are high, wait til you see what the rental company charges.

Thanks for the tips. Moving from No. Virginia up to the Great Lakes area. I may just bite the bullet and try to toss half the known contents of my apartment, then go smaller. Even so, it looks like my first three months "fun money" may just be used up in paying for the move. I may just crash with friends and wait to look for an apartment once I get there. Gah.

Depending on where you're moving to/from, you may want to check out the pricing on a movable storage pod rental. You usually pay by the size of the pod and the distance. It gives you the option of doing all your own packing/unpacking and knowing that your stuff isn't being loaded and mixed with someone else's.

There's also the plan I used. Price evaluate replacement versus moving your possessions and decide if it's just cheaper to replace your goods. It may not be a viable option; I don't know how attached you are to how many objects, but it worked well for me.

I'm going to have to look into this. Someone else suggested it, and it sounds better than U-Haul. I hate that place. I suppose I could just drive my car out, although no one that could help me with that drives stick. Smiley: frown

I'm going to try to use this week to toss out tons of stuff. I wish it was warm. I could have a yard sale and make some dough.

U-Haul can get pretty expensive. When they quoted me unbearably high, I looked into moving companies. ABF Movers had the best price versus what the Better Business Bureau had to say. They had a good rating (I didn't know anyone to ask for references). I ended up ditching all of my furniture and moving freight. I had just over 1,000 pounds of stuff and it cost 860 bucks to move from Watertown, NY to Oxford, MS (just over 1,200 miles and from one small town to an even smaller one). The catch is you have to pack it all yourself, and everything has to be in a box. You also have to label all the boxes as if they are being mailed. Included in that price was residential pick-up and drop-off...they came to my house. It took about 1 week to get the stuff, with the Christmas Holiday being right in the middle.

They also do U-Pack moving, where a moving van comes and you pack it. It is more expensive, but also a good deal if you have to move furniture. ABF is a big company and offers lots of options, and I had good luck with them. It really was cheaper to do ABF than to rent a trailer from U-Haul to stick on the back of my car.

Publicly plan an alla-femme's weekend. Secretly invite some of the male posters. When everyone shows up start the moving party.

I think a friend just told me about this, except she called it ABS. Sounds like a good option.

I'm upset that I even have to drive through Michigan.

Yay on the new job!!! At least when you're moving you have awhile before you're hit with the great lakes snow effect. Although it will be a perfect excuse for you to go out and do some winter clothes shopping. And boots. Did I mention boots?

CONGRATULATIONS! New job, new place, excitement!

If you want to go to the bother, see if you can find a private trucker from the area that you're moving too and see if he/she delivers where you're moving from. They don't like driving back empty and might give you a deal to haul some stuff.

Moving blows. I just moved practically down the street, and it about killed me, so I can't imagine having to go 750 miles, ugh.

I would cull books down to the bare minimum.

If you use a moving company pack your breakable's with EXTREME care. Wrap each glass, plate, figurine, individually. Pictures, mirrors etc should have moving blankets, old towels or whatever snuggly tied around them.......moving companies are NOT known for having the kid touch.
