After some deliberation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KHDG0HwPDw I still do not think that they forgot but did indeed leave the hypnotism to be totally vague just to be used as a device and I believe that the writers relied on the assumed poor perceptiveness of the audience to just forget the whole thing instead of actually trying to figure what the hypnotism was supposed to really achieve. I can see how thinking one way would lead you to hate the rest of the movie though in thinking that the hypnotism was some huge arch.

it was still a very funny movie and I would watch it again.

I hold them to the same degree of scrutiny, but I apply an Ebert style of criticism; that is I judge it against similar movies. I wouldn't try to compare Iron man to Baraka, but I would judge it against other superhero movies.

Well this is odd...I noticed the necrotic state of the thread right away, but something else startled me: I was always under the impression that Allegory was a female. Rather odd to find out he's really a Japanese schoolboy.

That's my shtick!

I think this is a common mistake. The point of having Dr. Swanson die at the therapy session wasn't to indicate that Peter would be stuck in his hypnotic state forever; it was to emphasize the fact that it worked, and Dr. Swanson's death didn't phase Peter in the least.

And he does mention it later:



Maybe now, Allegory, you can stop thinking you're God's gift to ****-retentive analysis, and enjoy the movie for what it is.

ETA: Also, Dr. Swanson says "one" as he keels over. So the hypnosis ended. You'll notice Peter gets a big grin on his face, and looks around and at his hands like he's never seen them before.

I also like Dogma and Office Space. I'm not surprised Allegory doesn't, though. After all, he thinks kids actually learn from toys.
