This was a footnote in all the hoopla surroundling the SotU address last night, but famous mom-of-a-fallen-soldier-and pissed-off-about-it-Bush-stalker Cindy Sheehan was invited to hear the address by her Congresswoman, and she was arrested and prevented from entering on her way in due to a t-shirt bearing anti-war slogans that she wouldn't remove. This was considered unlawful conduct.

Quote:
Police warned her that such displays were not allowed in the House chamber, but she did not respond, the spokeswoman said.

I suppose she should have stuck to glaring at the President, refusing to clap for the Republicans, or applauding Administration failures. This, apparently, was permissible behavior. Smiley: rolleyes

I laughed when I heard, because it seemed ridiculous in the extreme. Did this woman pose any kind of real threat?

Any time someone exercises freedom of speech or any other constitutional freedom it is a terroist act under the current administration.

I agree that she comes across as being somewhat less than rational.

Having said that, I have to wonder at an administration that is compelled to be so intolerant of dissent.

If everyone wearing t-shirts, regardless of slogan, were asked to leave, I'd say you had a point about the dress code. The other point doesn't apply, because this was not a private event in a private setting. This was the state of the union address in a venue that belongs to all of us, given by our employee.

She didn't necessarily make her point about the war. She did, however, make a point about the paranoia and intolerance of this administration, and THEY HELPED HER MAKE IT. How stupid is that?

Sounds like they also asked a congressman's wife to leave for wearing a pro-troops t-shirt.

I think her wearing what she did was rather inappropriate. She knew the rules of the event, and she broke them.

She had tons of attention and media, and probably could easily obtain press after the address. Instead, she's a dumbass, and fails to make any point other than to show that she is a dumbass.

Not that she isn't a dumbass, but Samira's point still holds true.

I see; so the real issue here is not that t-shirts themselves are not allowed, but that all slogans are protests.

Writing = bad, because it confuses and upsets the Neanderthals. Gotcha.

Sheehan's son: still dead.

No amount of media whoring will bring him back. She had her fifteen minutes and needs to retire to blissful obscurity. Maybe she can even find time to mourn.

The only reason they sell tickets, aside from the obvious "getting money to offset some of the cost" angle, is to limit the number of people who can attend. Theoretically, at least, such an address has been open to all citizens.

A few years back during the Clinton impeachment trial, some nutjob school teacher was removed from the Senate Gallery by Capitol police for wearing a t-shirt that said "Clinton doesn't inhale, he sucks."

I only vaguely recollect the story, because he was a guest of Sen. pRick Santorum, and only because at the time I remember thinking it was a rather poorly conceived way to sling more mud at Clinton.

That and I'll be damned if can find a link to it.

Of course the liberals are upset. They weren't allowed to ignore the rules of the house. The rule strictly forbids what she wore. What does she care for rules though? Well at least the ones that are inconvienent to her.

On a side note glad to see you rabid liberal nutjobs ignoring the wife of a florida congressman being kicked out based on her support the troops shirt she wore under her jacket.

After looking at the Dems and how they reacted to the speech I'm so happy I'm not a Dem. What a pathetic bunch of losers they are.

It's always amazing to me that people honestly believe that their freedom of speech means that they can show up anywhere and say anything via any method they want, no matter how inappropriate the time or place.

Freedom of speech means that the government can't prevent you from speaking on your own time with people who want to hear what you have to say. Freedom of speech does *not* mean you can force your "message" on others any time you want.

And lest there be any confusion as to *why* she wore that shirt:

Quote:
I wore the shirt to make a statement. The press knew I was going to be there and I thought every once in awhile they would show me and I would have the shirt on. I did not wear it to be disruptive, or I would have unzipped my jacket during George's speech. If I had any idea what happens to people who wear shirts that make the neocons uncomfortable that I would be arrested...maybe I would have, but I didn't.

The SOTU speech does not exist and is not televised so that Cindy Sheehan can make a political statement. It exists (and is constitutionally mandated) so the President can give his report to Congress (and through that process to the people) on the state of the union. She's free to wear and say whatever she wants before and after the event, but while she's there she should be respectful of the process and the office, even if she doesn't respect the man. At some point in the future, it'll be a Democrat president giving a similar speech. The respect one pays to the office applies across the board and despite claims by Sheehan and others, has been fairly applied when it comes to controversal messages from the gallery during the speech.

She did something incredibly stupid, and incredibly disrespectful, not just to Bush, but to the entire country. She really needs to get off herself and get over it.

Well, the people in charge of the event apparently disagree with you, and have apologized to both women.

I have no idea where you got the idea that freedom of speech only applies when speaking to people who agree with you. That is without a doubt the stupidest thing I've ever read.

Here's a hint: it was included as an expressed right in order to prevent the government from stifling political dissent. Dissent = "someone who does not agree with you."
