I came across these images, of 'Up Helly Aa!!!', in the paper this morning having my morning cup of coffee and found them compelling.
Scroll down a wee bit!

'Up Helly Aa', is a traditional festival of fire held up in Shetland Islands, Scotland. The spectacular event takes place annually on the last Tuesday of January. The climax of the day comes with participants in full costume, arrghh, "hauling a Viking longboat through the streets of Lerwick to the edge of town, where thousands of paraders will throw their flaming torches into the galley."

Needless to say, the 'Up Helly Aa' festival is now on my, "Things to see before you Die" list.

I'd go just for the ponies.

Hrm. I suppose I should have looked at more than the preview. Link corrected.

Not that pummeled, at least. Smiley: laugh

How did you end up getting a lady riding a small pony crossed with THAT, anyway?

It's the work computer, and it opened up to Google (which is not the standard). I suppose I forgot to hit "paste" or it was a gag. I was surprised to see what it turned into, since the preview link showed a man with a pony. Oh well.

If you like ponies and want to be heartbroken, you should check out the seeing eye ponies. Scroll all the way down for the pictures.

They wear tiny sneakers. It hurts me to look.

Why would this be heartbreaking? They're helping people to see, and sleeping in beds with pillows!

Ahh yes Shetland ponies, sheep, swollen throbbing anuses, it's all the same to a bunch of horny drunken Scotsmen dancing around with fire while pretending to be Vikings, I suppose.

An experience you'll never forget.

Oh - don't call the place "The Shetland Islands" - it's called "Shetland" - the locals get picky.

It's nearer mainland Norway than Scotland, but those are hard bastards and there's some serious competitive drinking goes on.

If you do get to go, wait til after Helly Ah before you accept a tankard. It needs to be seen sober.
