Despite the sage predictions of Totem and Varrus that Brokeback Mountain would be on video within a month of release...
After six weeks, still in the Top Ten (#9) at the box office, making a total of over $32mil which, for its $14mil budget, has the film firmly in the black even after distribution costs. This isn't counting foreign release or its eventual video release. Despite its small screen count (683 - King Kong lost more screens last week than Brokeback Mt has totalled), it has impressive per screen averages of nearly $8500 per. Two hundred more screens opened last weekend; expect more as Award season carries on along.
Yup. Probably on video any moment now. Be in the CVS Discount bin before February, I bet!
In non-cowboy related news, The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, despite less hub-bub than hoped for, has made $261mil, more than covering its $180mil production. TLW&W has greater toy and tie-in potential I suppose as well than the gay cowboys do King Kong has made a "mere" $202mil, but that doesn't yet meet its $230mil production. Again, none of this counts toy, game and clothing licensing, video releases and the like so don't think I'm panning King Kong as a flop. They'll get their money back for sure.
